I suppose this answers the question...Is a bear Catholic? Does the Pope shti in the woods?
I say we defend the religion by doing something violent. Yeah. That's the proper response to someone who talks about violence in the context of the religion. The nerve!

Sometimes, perhaps...especially when you have to deal with others who are traveling the universe at such an impaired rate...thanks for making that point so clear.
And what country is that you're from?

Not sure where 47 stands on this but lets look at some facts here.
95% + of all world conflict going on right now involves either Moslims fighting Muslims or Moslims fighting non-Moslims. There are large numbers of Muslim religious leaders involved in terrorist acts that kill inocent women and children in the name of their religion. These same Moslim religious leaders are openly calling for the total destrustion of Israel and the United States. Does this sound like a religion of peace to you? Name just one non-Muslim religious leader anywhere that is doing this.

The comment was all the bruhaha over the Pope's reference to an ancient text that somehow was offensive to Muslims. I thought it ridiculous. The thought, and a rational one at that, is that religion should not be violent in its advocacy. Yet, look at the violence that religion has begot...historically and recently. So...what is offensive about repudiationg the notion of (the use of) violence to advocate religion? How DARE the Pope make any such intimation.
What's interesting is that many Muslims in the world took offense to a cartoon out of Holland that depicted a charicature of Mohammed...as if anyone knows what he looks like...with a bomb as his turban. Yet those same Muslims fill textbooks in school, their newspapers and billboard with hideous cartoons of Jews and others who are Israeli's, and the things sacred to that religion. It's OK if they do it, but don't anybody else say anything different.
You guys following any of this? Or...Mari...do I need to slow down. I realize you're not the sharpest tool in the shed, and there are some Canadians and Brits who will catch on in a couple of days , but it's not rocket science.

The funny thing about those cartoons was that it was MONTHS after their publication that people protested them. I've heard that a certain government started the whole thing to take the spotlight off of them... It's too bad people don't think for themselves.
In Monty Python's "Life of Brian", Brian awakens to find thousands of people outside his door waiting as if he were the savior, hanging on his every word. He tells everyone that they are all individuals. They repeat, in unison, "we are all individuals". I thought it was funny.
And why were't Christians incensed about that movie?

"And why were't Christians incensed about that movie?"
My first thought to that was to say that no one told them to be so they didn't know to be incensed about it. The more I see religious people in general the more convinced I become that religion is a crutch for those too weak-minded or too stupid to make up their own minds about anything unless, of course, they are the "shepherd" of their flock and need a new Mercedes or some followers to riot for them to get attention and then the religion becomes food for these parasites to feed from.
Warning, I am now taking this thread on a tangent from the original topic.
If history does indeed repeat itself, we are destined to enter another period similar to the Dark Ages in the next couple of centuries? Have the idots of the world been procreating at such a prodigious rate for so long that intellectual people can no longer keep pace and thus not keep the balance of intelligence versus stupidity/ignorance anymore? Is the world destined to be dragged down into the abyss of the idiots' mind simply because there is too much burden to bear to keep society from slipping over the edge?

I am not incensed because its between them and God.

I see we have an Einstein here on the forum.

No. What we have here is a neo-fascist. [And Tab-mari is a charlatan and a coward for reasons unrelated to this thread or even this forum. Don't even go there.]
Hey - you're the guys who can't follow along. Do we need to go back to using one syllable for y'all? Posting for the remedial reader 101? I mean, I know you're not Canadian (no offense to the many fine Canadians who post here...).
Neanderthal. There's something to be said for a sense of humor or, in some cases, a lack thereof. Or do some of you just not get it?? Based on the posts I've read, I presume the latter. The point of my post that you so obviously missed is the irony in how violent a world religion collectively becomes at the mere mention of something violent about it. We are a people of peace, and if you don't believe us, we will bring blood to you and you will die like a miserable pig. Sounds sane to me. Is it an accident, this perception? The Pope was trying to say something important, and an obscure Medievel reference to a text then apparently ruffled some feathers for good cause.
Neo-fascist dude...I concur with you:
"95% + of all world conflict going on right now involves either Moslims fighting Muslims or Moslims fighting non-Moslims. Yeah, I know...out of your cold dead hands.

neo-facist? Tabmari? Coward? I guess its easy to call folks these names when you hide behind your computer. And this has what to do with anything unrelated to this forum?

Tab mari and you didn't get it. Too bad it's beyond your ken. Go back to your bourbon and allow a sensible discussion to take place about the absurdity of the outrage about the Pope's comments.
Look who's talkin' tough. Unbelieveable.

No need to get your bowels in an uproar. Listen...tomorrow's football day. Drink up and enjoy. In this discussion, you're way out of your league.
Any time...funny stuff. John Birch? KKK? NRA? Anything else?

Yeah, I guess this IS remedial thought 101. Not a cogent one among the last several posts.
So - anything you rocket scientists have to contribute that relates to the thread? No? Great. As if it wasn't readily apparent that you just didn't get it from the inception.
Now who has their dander up...coming out of the woodworks to defend your, um, "position"? This is like pushing around a piece of string.
Now the inevitable..."I know you are but what am I...?"
Let me help you out, neo-fascist: I wouldn't be out of "their" league, as "their" league is where you are. I am in quite a different one, obviously, and you are the one who intermeddled...that would make you out of your league because you're very confused and are the one having a hard time following along. So one would say, as I reiterate, you are out of your league, not their league, because if you are out of your own league, then you're neither comfortable with nor capable of dealing with the another one, hence, the comment. Need me to slow down? Just say so.
My, oh, my aren't we aggressive...and yeah, sometimes it's hard when you have to deal with people like this/you. How do you people survive in the real world?

Being (most probably) one of the rare Catholocis on this thread, I will chip in my 2 Canadian cents woth. I don't go to church very often now, but I did for some time and was educated by Sulpicians and Jesuits (even learned latin and all that) so I have a fair notion of the question and its corollaries. So, however unfortunate the misinterpretation of Benoît XVI's speech (or his choice of words) it does not modify my position: I do not like this pope at all. Enough so that I even thought of officially repudiating my faith (there's a procedure for this). I don't like is stance on contraception, homosexuality and women in the faith (among other things) and I beleive he is generally swaying away from the essential message of Christ, not to mention stirring up shlt instead of being a pastor of peace.
