My bro-in-law was heading out for a biz trip when he was told he had to leave his zippo. It was engraved and a gift. They said he could mail it to himself, but he didn't have time, the plane was boarding. He decided to get out of line and take the whole thing apart and just take the casing. They still wouldn't let him on with it. Had to chuck it. So I would also say they are banning anything that resembles a lighter, even if it couldn't light anything.

look, its not important that the flights are safe. its only important that they give the look of being safe.

I have a better idea, instead of banning lighters. How 'bout we ban bombs on the planes????

I say we ban everything and everyone stay home and secluded. Atleast that is what the TV news has been telling me to do for 26 years.

I never bring a lighter or cutter of value with me or in my carry-on. I will pack my good lighter and cutter in checked luggage. If I feel the need to carry a light or cutter, I'll bring along a promotional cigar store cutter and a box of wooden matches. I throw them away before boarding. I can at least see the reasoning behind the matches, as a bomb could be smuggled aboard and the matches used to light it. Also a lighter could be used to light any material on fire, clothing, seats, etc. forcing the plane to land or distracting the crew.

I articule states that they are not banning matches.

A good reason to rediscover the beauty of toasting and lighting your favorite sticks with a wooden match. Pick some up when you arrive at your destination. An inconvenience to be sure. Until TSA and homeland security decide to screen all freight being shipped via commercial airlines we're not safe. Smokers can't carry a lighter, but TSA and Homeland security have no idea of what's being shipped in the big a$$ crates. Bill

That and what the starting pay is around $18,000.00 they sure make me feel secure.

They should ban matches too, since smoking isn't allowed on the plane or in most boarding areas, there is no need to take matches on a plane. I would never attempt to bring matches or anything questionable on a flight because with my luck I would end up face down getting handcuffed by airport security. I also don't want to be the @hole holding up the line explaining why I need my lighter on a smoke-free flight.

I believe that lighters have been banned from checked luggage for some time...over concerns about rapid pressure changes, etc. in the cargo hold.

Usually, I just take my cigars. Pick up a cheapo lighter and cutter at my destination. If my travel involves an extended stay, and I want my own stuff, I FedEx it to my destination. Then, FedEx the stuff back. No problem. Actually takes the hassle out of it all.
