On most of the round ones, the top pops on and off. You can also replace the green sponges.

Yes its possible to open them up, don't know if you can actually clean them out. What you can do though is go to a florist or one of those Arts & Crap stores and purchase floral foam. Take the old stuff out and then use the humidification device like you would a cookie cuttter on the floral foam, and you have a brand new humidification element.
"They're not real Cubans. They're Dominicans." Yeah. I'm a little worried. When there's no work, and the people get restless, who do you think they come after?... El Presidente!

Although I did used to do this myself to make my own humidifier using Oasis wet foam, I was advised against it. I was told that the correct 'density' has to be accurate so I should stick with pre-made ones designed for humidors. However, it was my local B&M that told me this. Can anyone else atest to this?

I struggled to keep mine balanced at 65.. it hung closer to 60, which is a little too dry for me. But this was also when I was less experienced, and probably wasn't the greatest humidor either. It's only about $2 for a big blog of foam from your floral shop, so give it a shot. Not much to lose if it doesn't work. Just keep your old stuff just in case.

I hate foam as a humidification element. I found it too tempermental. Hard to keep the right humidity for my tastes.
My main humidification element is now kitty litter - Litter Pearls - nonscented. They work great and keep the humidity right at 65% where I like it. Also use Boveda packs in my tuperdors.
