I've always been a fan of Jim Beam with my cigar, but I am looking for something a little different. Maybe a more upscale bourbon, with less of a burn? Thoughts?

Maker's Mark is the best bourbon you'll find.

B and C: graduating from Beam is easy and will be very rewarding.
This list is a good starter list--others will chime in and help you fill your tasting list.
1. Elijah Craig 12 y.o.
2. Russels Reserve
3. Knob Creek
4. 1792
5. Old Forester 100 proof(not the 86)

There are many others but I think you will find something to enjoy here.

Yeah, I agree, that's a good list. Then again, Bourbon and Cigar guy, you said you like Beam and Maker's Mark? Those are opposites, but I'd always go for the Maker's. It just goes down a little smoother than the rest. I do like Knob Creek too though.

How do you drink your bourbon?

Makers Mark is good neat...with an Ashton VSG. Ditto Knob Creek.

Also try JD Single Barrel for a good Tennessee Sour Mash...quite flavorful.

Jim Beam is my go to choice when sitting around the campfire in the back woods...has that gritty, unrefined flavor that goes well in the great outdoors, with a Rocky Patel EDGE.

I too am a bourbon fan, and would like to add to dforrest's excellent list Woodford Reserve. Probably my favorite.
Also are all of Jim Beam's poutique bourbons, Booker's, Basil Hayden and Knob Creek.

Years ago I liked Rebel Yell. Very mild, very cheap. Probably be overcome by any med to full flavored cigar, but used to be good.

I am a Jack Daniels fan. Always got a bottle of regular Jack and on special occasions I'll get a bottle of Single Barrel or Gentle Mans Jack.

I'd put Wild Turkey Rare Breed against any Bourbon, it's a single barrel that goes great with any cigar...IMHO

Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 20 year is amazing stuff. My wife started a new tradition last year when she bought me a bottle for my birthday. At least I told her it was a tradition and that she needed to make sure and get me another bottle this year!

Warm Texas evening, comfy chair on the deck, 3 fingers of bourbon, dog at my feet, and a good cigar. It doesn't get any better!

Ditto the Maker's as top choice, followed by, in no particular order, the Woodford, Rare Breed, and I would add Blanton's Single Barrel.

Jim Beam Black is very good.
I agree with some of the others, Makers Mark, Knob Creek, Evan Williams Single Barrel.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed

great Bourbon - the real deal

I also like Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Basil Haydens, Booker's

In the absence of Rare Breed, Turkey 101 isn't too bad at all

I second the nod to Woodford. What my dad would call a good sipping whiskey

Back when I could drink bourbons before the doctor told me I couldn't drink it anymore, I used to love Knob Creek and Rare Breed with a nice full bodied cigar. Those were probably my favorite go to bourbons. Someone mentioned Rebel Yell...man,that was a very well made bourbon years ago..its a shame its no longer available..was a very mild bodied bourbon that went well with a less powerful smoke.

And a mental note here...nothing that Jack Daniels makes is considered anything close to being a bourbon..it doesn't fit the definition

I'm amazed nobody has offered up Blanton's. Quite possibly the best bourbon under $50 I've ever had...

and confirmed by everyone I've seen taste it as well..

No joke. Please go try it... all these $100+ bourbons are stretching into the Scotch profile and missing what bourbon is supposed to be...
