And asked me to pass it on.

Letter by a Florida teacher................ A teacher speaks

This is a subject close to my heart. Do you know that we have adult students at the school where I teach who are not US citizens and who get the PELL grant, which is a federal grant (no pay back required) plus other federal grants to go to school?

One student from the Dominican Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting a PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money leftover.

She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program (check it out - I did) for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts of needs while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US Citizen because she plans to return to the Dominican Republic someday and that she 'loves HER country.'

I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the US is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen and she told me that it doesn't bother her, because that is what the money is there for!

I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a US Citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education.

Something is wrong here. I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY.

IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along. I am not against immigration -- just come through like everyone else.

Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

PART OF THE PROBLEM, Think about this: If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone -- YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM! It is Time for America to Speak up If you agree -- pass this along, if you don't agree --- delete it!

That has been floating around a while. Just to point out, she never says the immigrants are "illegal". Those programs are available only to documented, legal immigrants.

I think too many irrelevant things are mixed up here. Anthem in foreign language - I agree it's absurd. Free education programs for foreigners - let me tell you US government is not as stupid as it may seem. Whether one likes or hates US, education there brings something American under one's skin. Want it or not, it impacts the person, who starts often perceive many things as an American, accept a lot of American values, feel somehow closer to the US and so on. Speaking from own experience.
It's one of the smartest things US has ever done. That's like creating friends of America in other countries. And you know what - if that woman was to become US citizen and live in US, I don't see any point giving her free education.

In theory it sounds like a good idea or does it?

Your implication is that U.S. universities should admit and train no foreign students, because who knows? Some day, their country might become part of some "axis of evil".

The NPR story you linked to clearly points out that the MIT program was during the mid-70s, before the fall of the Shah, when Iran was our strong friend and ally. When the Shah was deposed, the program immediately ended.

To tell you the truth, if I was offered an education opportunity and a career in the US, I won't hesitate to take it. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with having dual citizenships. But I won't want them to make me a special national anthem in Arabic, that would be retarded.

You live in a place, follow it's rules.

Check into it, there are programs for international students all over the place.

Also, this goes both ways. You can be an American, study at a foreign university and get $$, and return.

Another email forward full of inaccurate and misleading information, this time with a blatant anti-immigrant spin. Why am I not surprised? Roll Eyes

As usual snopes give their opinion based on their own research. If I had the time I would look into where snopes gets it's funding and make my own web site called snopes for snopes. Everyone just assumes they are always correct.

I implied absolutly nothing. The post previous to mine basically said we should be educating as many foreigners as possible because they will go back to their own countries and become friends of the U.S. which happens to be a crock of BS
1. since a huge portion do not go back to their own countries
2. & in many cases we are training the next generation of enemies

Thats great if foreigners want to get educations in the U.S. however I should not be subsidizing it, if they pay out of state tuition and get no "freebies" from the U.S. great let them come, then let them go back.

Ummm ... Sheep (and Prof. Punch), snopes.com is a website that addresses and debunks internet rumors, popular myth, urban legends, etc. Read what comes after that "Letter by a Florida teacher" on Pell Grants on the page you linked to. Or that big, red 'False' just above it.

I'd be interested in your source for these items.

I agree with those who believe American universities should be seeking out and admitting academically-qualified international students, including those from developing countries, and that the U.S. should be generous in granting student visas to them. It's to everyone's benefit down the road.

If they're talented, educated and trained graduates of American colleges and universities, why would you not want them to stay so U.S. businesses could take advantage of their knowledge and potential? Do you have an economic rationale, or do you just dislike "foreigners"?

Granting visas for a period of time is good as long as they return to their country of origin & pay for their own education

I pay huge taxes I'd rather the $ go to educate academically-qualified American students

is there ANY reason why something as ridiculous as this is on a cigar forum, where we are to be discussing cigars?

This is a subject you can easily find referenced and discussed, one which most new members have ascertained before making a complaint like yours.

You're welcome to join us, but judging from the tone of your post, you might be more comfortable on some other board, rather than this one.

Jack, Snopes has migrated to more and more opinion and less fact. This one, for instance, is stated as "False", when technically, there is nothing false about it. It is factually correct. Snopes takes the liberty of ranting about what is "implied". In the old days, they dealt only with facts. That's not so much the case anymore. There are better resources for debunking internet myths.
