OK... here's the situation.

Checked my humidor this morning and there was pretty sizable mold build up coming out of my humidifier. I took out all of my cigars immediately... I did notice that 3 of them had bluish/green spots on them, so I tossed them (cuban Trinidads SOB!) I also wiped down the moldly spot from the inside of the humidor with some water and a towel.

I went out and bought isopropyl and will wipe down the entire interior of the humidor tonight. I understand that will kill off all the spores. Obviously, I will also throw away the humidifier element and replace with my spare.

Does anyone have any other tips? Should I re-wipe down my humidor with distilled water again, or should I just let the alcohol do its work over night and replace my cigars in a few days? I also am moving my humidor to my interior closet just in case I was getting too much sunlight.

EDIT: I did do some research on here and noticed that some like to sand down the humidor. My guy at the smoke shop says that the isopropyl should take care of the mold and that sanding is unnecessary. Any comments on that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Do not wipe down the humidor with water.

Are you certain that you had mold on the cigars? Was it fuzzy green?

Water can spot a cigar and is harmless, but mold will make a cigar taste like poo.

Replace the humidification element and be certain to use Propylene Glycol in the humidifier every 6-months to prevent mold.

Thanks Doc... it was a blue green spot sans the fuzz. So I'm not 100% sure, but I still have them at home. I'll re-check them when I get back. To be honest, those Trinidad's weren't all that great... I was relieved that none of my others looked worse for wear.

I've been advised to alcohol it down and leave the lid open for 24 hours. Then, put in a newly soaked humidifer for another 24. I think in these humid Chicago summers, it seems a lot of people forego the humidifiers altogehter.

Here's this morning's update.

After applying the rubbing alcohol to the entire humidor last night, low and behold, there are two little black marks in the ceiling. From what I understand, it's something to do with the wood or finish itself and nothing to fret about. It just looks ugly. Anyone else have this happen?

Thanks as always.

One of my humidors has some black spots. I don't know why and there is no mold in the box. I guess I would say, don't worry.
