Anyway, I've been priming my humidor for a week or so, and it's maintaining right at 70% RH consistently. HOWEVER, the temp is pushing 76 degrees, and the humidor is in the coolest part of the house!
Obviously I'm worried about beetles hatching, but I just don't know what to do about the temperature.
Do they make any kind of cool/cold base you can place small humidors on? Anything?
Thanks everyone -- I'm REALLY looking forward to being part of the community here!
After making the post, I did happen to find a cooler spot in the house: our front bedroom. I like the idea of having my cigars in my office, but I guess it's just too warm in there with all my computer and stuff.
As of right now, it looks like the room temp is going to hold around 72 degrees or a little lower. I'm going to let the thermo sit all day as the sun rises and sets to try and get an average (I'm guessing it will be around 73.5 deg avg).
I guess I'll then test the temp inside the humidor and see how close it is to room temp.
Other than this room, on top of the dresser in there, I suppose I could put the humidor inside one of the end tables, right?
Yes, do what you have to to keep the humidor cool. I had trouble too finding the right spot. At first I had it in a closet in the hallway. At night it was perfect but during the day It was up to 74-75 deg. Then I moved it into my gun room and it sits at 68% rh at 60-66 deg. When summer comes, It will be another battle!
Some people in warmer climes use wine refrigerators, coverting them to coolerdors by lining them with cedar. Temperature-controlled storage humidors are expensive, but can be found here:
Here in ATL, I keep my desktop humidor in my home office near an AC vent during the summer, and I keep the heating vents closed in that room during the winter.
You are right to be concerned regarding temperature.
