I been buying from JR's for a while now and I find that it's often cheaper to get 5 of the 5-packs instead of buying buy a 25ct box.

Example: Montesino SG Belicoso Magnums.
Box Price, 25ct: $105.00
5 x 5pack: 5 x $16.50 = $82.50 + $10 shipping.
(also, after 5 items shipping goes down to from $2 per item to $.50/item)

So what's the catch? You save $12 bucks by buying the 5 packs for the same number for cigars. Why would it be cheaper to buy that way? Is it that people will pay a premium just to get the box? On most other sites it's cheaper to get a complete box instead of buying peice meal. What gives?

Beats me.

It's the same way with the CAO Cameroon Robustos.

5 pack = $21
20 ct Box = $118

Maybe it's the fact that JR's gives something away with almost every bax of cigars they sell. In this case, "Buy 1 box and get a box of Romeo y Julieta Dreams FREE!"

For one thing you are not paying for a wooden box which can add $5.00 or more to the cost.

Why else I have no idea. Why not e-mail JR and ask them.

Shhhhh I think someone at JR's is asleep at the wheel. Just let them sell us cigars cheaper.

Also, you have to take into account the $2 per item charge. If you get 5 five packs, the shipping is $10 if you get a box of 25 cigars, the shipping is $2. That accounts for part of the differnce, JR's knows it doesn't cost $2 to send a five pack and reduce their price on 5 packs accordingly.

I believe I read somewhere (maybe JR's own catalog) that many of the cigars for the 5 packs come out of boxes damaged in shipping...hence no boxes and the sticks have to be sold as singles but since Lew doesn't mail order singles the 5 packs might be the smallest quantity he can turn a profit on.

Shorthair - C'mon man, you gotta be kidding me! The Sun Growns are awesome!! I agree that the rest of the Monte's are not that great, but "dog rockets" is a wee bit harsh. Smile

Anyway - Looks like I'm not the only one who can't answer why they're cheaper. I was telling my local tobacconist about how I buy the SGs at JRs for $3.70/ea including shipping and he wouldn't believe me. He sells them for $6.50 plus tax.

I buy the 5 packs all the time; no catch...except...for each 5 pack you pay $2 shipping! Hence, if you buy 5 5-packs, that's $10 shipping. Be sure to add this in to see how good a deal you're getting when you buy multiple 5-packs!

Other than that, go for it! Great way to mix and match different cigars!

BinDer, because you would get frustrated if you weren't able to impart words of wisdom, even if to those that don't "listen". Instead, you impart the words to those that don't "listen" and get frustrated, vicious circle don't you think?

One thing that's always bummed me out is the $20 minimum order. From a business stand point I can understand it, I just wish that there were times I could order a single 5 pack to try a new cigar.

I gotta tell ya'...yeah there is a minimum order, but I HAVE in the past had them send me a single smoke, even though they advertise that they don't do that. I had wanted to try a new smoke, bu they didn't have them in a five pack...I called to see if they HAD any to put together in a 5. They put me on hold then came back and said he could send me a single...shocked the **** out of me. Glad they didn't make me buy more, cause the cigar was not that great.
