Since there have been a few recent discussions re defensive firearms tactics & etc., this may be of interest.

Although details are sketchy, NFL player Sean Taylor died today, apparently as a result of a gunshot (pistol) wound to his upper thigh, damaging his femoral artery.

Although EMTs were immediately summoned, by the time he got to the ER his blood loss was catastrophic.

As one trainer whom I know has noted, "this is a classic example of a death that was probably
preventable via the simple/aggressive application of an IBD, as we teach in our
Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds Course."

"Unfortunately, no one at the scene knew what to do, nor did they have a legitimate trauma kit handy. These are life-saving skills that should be well known to every Operator. Some GSW deaths are not preventable, but
most are!"

I'm not sure based on the scant facts here that Mr. Taylor's wounds would not have been fatal had an IBD been applied, but this event can serve to emphasize that an IBD is a must in every range bag and in every home, period. They are not just for gunshot wounds.

IBDs can be found (listed as Emergency Camouflage Bandage Dressing) at:

When you do that, why then you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40% of our national income.

Yeah, sad story.
Kinda strange too, from what I've heard, gun shot wounds are not uncommon around where he lived.

I carry my Glock 23 everywhere I go. I have a license to carry it, this is one reason why.

The saddest part is that he was 24 years old...

An excellent pistol. It needs no "improvements" such as the Lightning Strike titanium striker, extended mag release buttons, extended slide stop levers, or weighted recoil spring rods that some insist upon adding. It will run for weeks without much maintenance--and no oil-- in the harshest of conditions. Hope you have training beyond the minimum required in some states for your license.

Thanks for the info on the IBD, I think I'm gonna get a couple. I too carry a Glock, a 23 on me and a 22 next to me at night, absolutely awesome guns, have never had any problems with them, even when I load up my 32 round mag and fire it as fast as I can!! Big Grin

From what I've heard on the news reports, this man was denied the right to self protection and the ability to protect his family due to past infractions with the legal system. Easy pickings for a BG. Millionaire in his home, unarmed.

Too bad.I don't follow football but I hear that he was a fine player of the game.

This is probably retaliation for his assault and battery charge from about 2 weeks ago, someone also broke into his house on the 17th and didnt take anything. This was planned all along. Its sad to see it happen to such a great player at such a young age, but his actions cant be overlooked as the cause.

IBDs are nice, but I still stress to my medics packing with Kerlex and use of Ace wraps over it.

I'm not sure how high up on the thigh this wound was, but may also be an example of how a tourniquet could have saved the day, despite the dreaded status this treatment course has associated with it outside of the military medical community.

Yes, but for us non-medics, an IBD is a single product that is easily tossed in a glove compartment, range bag, medecine cabinet, etc. It's an easy compromise that works until the professionals can go to work in most domestic cases.

As a Paramedic with over twenty years of service I can say an IBD would probably not have changesd the outcome! One one occasion we were able to find an artery that was severed, reach in(gloved) and pinched off the artery by hand. Accompanied the vic to the Operating room till surgeons could jump in. Large arteries like the femoral can bleed out rapidly. If one doesn't die from blood loss, death usually occurs secondary to major shock. Body organs deprived of oxygenated blood is usually the culprit.
