My brother-in-law's father died yesterday. He was a retired RADM in the US navy, and a really good man. Unfortunately, he had lung cancer...even though he was never a smoker. Apparently, a type of cancer called mesothelioma is pretty prevalent among the navy folks of his generation.
Before we knew any better, between World War II and the early 1970's, thousands of tons of asbestos insulation were used to insulate the boilers and steam piping systems inside of Navy ships. Now we're finding out it causes lung cancer.
However, he fought the good fight, served his country honorably and was a faithful husband and loving father.
If it so strikes you...offer up a few puffs for RADM Philip J. Coady, USN Ret. this week.
May God rest his soul.

It is always a sad day when one of the fine men or women that have served this country with honor and distinction leaves this life prematurely.
I found the following link that gives a lot more information on RADM Coady. He was a highly decorated Naval officer, and he went on to devote a great deal of his time and energy to numerous military and veteran organizations.
Thanks for posting the link. I had not seen that yet.
See a problem, address it and do what you can to change it. So typical of his type.

N3P, sorry to hear about your father-in-law's brother. My prayers are with you and your family. My stepfather also died from this same type of cancer, he was a diesel mechanic and back in the 50's and 60's they used asbestos in the brakes. It's apparently a very slow progressing cancer, as he was told that it had developed over 15-20 years before he was diagnosed with it.
It'll be an honor to smoke a cigar in RADM Philip J. Coady's memory. Anchors Away!!!

N3P I feel your pain and send my condolences. My father too died of the same form of cancer almost 12 years ago. He worked in the automotive industry and apparently that's where he got it from. We were unaware that he had it until about 2 1/2 months before he died.
My family and I will be attending the wake this evening, followed by the funeral tomorrow.
