My son Erik graduates tonight from high school. The cerimony is at the University of South Florida auditorium where he is going to start next fall...maybe an omen ?? I am very proud of him, he got the state's Bright Futures scholarship (for his grade average of 3.5) and a $4,000 grant from USF.

I've been looking for a job for the last two weeks since I graduated. I've had a few interviews and two job offers, but they really aren't what I would like to be doing. I'll probable accept a job tomorrow at Champs Sporting Goods. It’s a store management position which will hold me over until some new jobs open up around the Albany area. I'm looking to get a position with the Albany Conquest once their season comes to an end in August.
I've also been applying for post graduate positions at some NCAA schools across the country. I'm willing to go anywhere for experience. It’s been a extraordinarily frustrating two weeks not working or having anything to do. I think I went through a ream of paper in the last two weeks by just sending out resumes and letter’s of applications. Everyone keeps telling me to be patient but money is getting low and I have two bachelor parties coming up this summer. If Champs offers me a position tomorrow, I’ll take it just so I can have some steady paper coming in.

I had a job lined up in Silicon Valley, programming for a cellphone development company. Not really my forte' but expierence is expierence. This recently fell-through, as my contact left the organization for a start up in L.A.

The realization dawned on me over the weekend that in two weeks, I will have no income stream, no worth-while amount of savings, and no very liquid assets (I do own a house, but those are tough to turn into cash quickly), so I'm begining to stress about what how I'm going to pay for anything post-June 11th. My parents told me "tough, find a job"; but those don't exaclty pop up and employee you all in a week. My Dad is a major player in the lab industry and can likely find me a job if need be; but riding in on the coat-tails of your father is not a great way present in a new company.

Hope you can find something soon.

Hey Guys....the business marketplace can be a bit fickle and frustrating at times, but it can also be very rewarding......just keep at it.
DD: If you can get a job through your Father....go for it.....

Rule #1:don't live your life by worrying what other people think of you....
Rule #2: follow your heart, but accept opportunity when it bangs you in the head....

Work experience is your number one priority right now, nobody will know if you had "inside" help when they read your resume....and in the real world, thats part of the way the game is played: use all your resources to get where you want to be.
You will find many people along the way that will either take you under their wing, or give you a career boost in one manner or another; it called "Mentoring"......use it.
You will also find folks along the way that will do everything they can to discourage you as well....see Rule #1

Good Luck
Cool

It's often who you know, not what you know. The business world is not fair. Take every advantage you can get.

Barring any unforseen and unfortunate circumstances, on August 6th I'll have my degree. I've had a few job offers thrown my way, so I think I'm probably o.k. there. I plan on spending some time in Canada relaxing with my relatives and of course, smoking Cuban cigars. When I get back, I'll worry about a job. I can probably find work with Veritas Software, but the nephew of a much older friend of mine works at IBM. I could probably try to angle for that as well.

Work sucks.

DD,

I basically agree with you. It was a lot more rewarding finding my own jobs than getting them because of who my dad was, although I did try that angle too and it never worked. These guys are basically right, though, that it's often who can get you in and then you can prove yourself to the employer. If you don't, everyone there could make life miserable for you or you could lose your job.
