Just recieved the new JR Catalouge and on the front cover that is the question. Also on Mikes Cigars website and an email he talks about the embargo ending this year and the effect it will have on domestic cigar sales.
This was my question some time back and I believe the cigars from Nic, Dom and Hon and else where the prices will fall condsiderably and at first the Cuban Cigars will be a little pricey or maybe not, just to compete in the market, then when they are selling millions of sticks here, they will go up in price. There will def be an oportunity to make money on them.
This question is asked here every 2 or 3 weeks and the answer is always just speculation. No one really knows for sure. First of all, the embargo ending doesn't mean Cuban cigars will be available in your shop the next day. There are tons of legal issues regarding the names of different Cuban brands, whose names NC companies have adopted to market in the U.S., that have to be sorted out in court first. Who knows how long that could take.
One thing's for sure. Once Cubans are available in the U.S., I doubt you're gonna see many $20/stick NC's flying off the shelves anymore.

Remember that the famous Cuban names like Partagas, Cohiba, Romeo and Julieta etc... are owned by very large American and European companies. They will never allow their properties to be infringed upon. We would have the opportunity to purchase NO Name Cuban Cigars

While you are correct - that this is a concern - it is not a large problem unless a person has his heart set on a specific brand. Only a few are really in contention. Yes those are premium brands, but not a disaster if they cannot be presented at launch in the U.S.
Montecristo, H. Upmann, Romeo y Julieta, Trinidad and others will not be any problem as the trademark is owned internationally by Altadis.
For others there will be legal options once trading is again established.

I don't think the quality will ever chang but I'm shure the market will be flooded with fakes. And the only way the price will go down is if the new president , dictator or what ever you want to call that person, removes the 100% tax Fidel Castro has on exported cigars. If they don't remove that. The prices will not go down. But when they first become available legally In the US For A little while the price is more then likly going to be even higher then they are any where else in the world, right know.until all the excitement, curiosity, novalty and hype. yes ther will be a bunch of hype by retailers about cuban cigars, where's off. Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing CC's I have my favorite CC's just like the reast of you. And the fakes, Oh man you know we would be flooded with them. ANd thats what is going to suck about the end of the embargo. Just my 2 or 3 cent's.

The embargo should have ended with the fall of the USSR.But do you not think buying oil is trading with the enemy. So lets say it does end,it would be worse than it is right now.Do you think peopl will still buy 20-30 dollar Opus X sticks. It will have to stay the way it is too many people stand to lose alot of money if it changes.

What's all this about a 100% tax that Fidel imposes on exports? Where did you get that from? So, a box of robustos that costs $140 in Cuba costs at least $280 no matter where? And that's because of a tax?
You are out there, dude (as they say). The analysis there is way off base.
In fact, life as we know it will cease to exist once the embargo ends.
And as a side note, it's not a Cuban embargo, but rather, a US embargo against transactions involving goods of Cuban origin.
Regarding fakes...I think that the OPPOSITE will be true for the most part, because with open commerce comes stability and it will be in the black market, if you are inclined to enter it, where the problem with counterfeits will be.
Demand will spike (but first you must assume that the fanciful and frivolous attempts on the part of the original owners of the brand names to try to extract money out of the situation and make it as difficult as possible to market the cigars in the US, will be summarily resolved), and prices will rise. That's the beauty of a free market as opposed to a monopoly where prices are fixed arbitrarily. Eventually, things will stabilize. If FUENTE can satisfy the cigar hunger of a voracious US appetite, then the Cugans can eventually get it together too. There will be another boom, but the market will react.

I agree Coriolanus. Everyone knows what Dale is saying and he gives valid points, but of course someone has to be a d*ck and screw up the good decorum we had.

Well if I can get my smokes from overseas cheaper than I will in the US, I will contiune to use the overseas source. I think there willl be a mini cigar boom again. I say you should invest in a Habanos SA, US distributor.

I guess the only thing that'll happen after the embargo is lifted and the trademark issues resolved is reduction of cigars shipped worldwide to handle the demand of our neighbors from the south.... so, it'll be harder to find what you want, and it'll cost you more... so let's hope this day is not for tomorrow....
