I was just gifted an unopened and supposedly 2 year old box of Montecristo #4s. I am rehydrating with the box unopened for now. However, inspecting the box I did not find a date stamp on the bottom. The seal was the old type. The box was sealed in waxed paper. I'm suspecting they are fake. Anybody have any experience with this?

I would smell them. Cuban cigars to me have an unmistakeable smell. If that doesn't work as it often doesn't for sticks with some age on them. Spark it up. You should be able to tell immediately.

Dominican fake. Montecristos in Cuba are not sealed in wax paper. But I've seen such boxes brought from Punta Cana.

They were definitely purchased in Cuba. Probably off the street, but the guy was there for a business seminar and brought them back. I will be opening them sometime today to check.

As dagobert says, fakes. No cuban montecristo that I've ever heard of has ever been sealed in wax paper. And if they are two years old, the box will have all the normal cuban markings on the bottom of the box, and all the document stamps and Habanos label will be in the appropriate place. Just be glad you didn't pay for them.

Opened the box. Cigars are dry as a bone. Construction not that good. Sacrificed one of the sticks. Post mortem: short filler. Oh well.

Well, put the tobacco into water, wait a few days and spray your roses in the foregarden. That will prevent louses and other vermin. 100% biological solution Wink

(trick of my father, who is always collecting the leftovers from my cigars).
