I am smoking at the moment a Montecristo Petit Tubo the tubed version of the #4.... or so I thought. It is undoubtedly real (and you can't really get fakes here anyway). Weird thing is- it has a slight but unmistakeable box-press. Has anyone ever encountered this before? I haven't.
It was given to me by a friend, so maybe they just gave him a spare tubo that was lying around. Who knows?

Once at a B&M I asked for a Monte Edmundo to smoke there. The price for those in tubos was like a couple of euros higher, and I asked to give me one without tubo. The guy couldn't find the box, but the tubos were just in front of us. So he pulled one out of the tubo, handed to me and said he'll put one in the empty tubo later. Maybe smth. like this happened?

I've never seen that before. There are a number of ways it could have happened I suppose. As you said, they may have put it in the tube at the shop for carrying. I suppose it's possible they opened boxes at the factory and put them into tubes if they needed to get tubos out. If they chop the ends of Edmundos to make Petit Edmundos I can't see why they wouldn't do that. Cigars are stacked up for a while at the factory before they go into tubes/boxes, could it happen that the ones at the bottom get a little bit of pressing, who knows?

I've seen the indention from the ribbon that bound the wheel in the factory show up in dress boxes and tubos several times before. A slight box press appearance likewise wouldn't cause me alarm.

If you're asking where I heard that, there were links to pictures of it being done posted here a few months ago. I'm surprised there wasn't more discussion about it at the time. I thought it was quite big news.

Second, they taste different enough to reveal the ruse instantly.

Yea thats true, there was such a demand for the Petit Edmundo, they couldnt get them rolled and out fast enough. Thus they were cutting Edmundos off to make the difference. I watched it happen with my own two eyes.

I will not argue with what you saw with your own two eyes...
Tonight right after supper I will take out my supply of Edmundos (three full boxes plus some in a desktop humidor)and cut them to PE size. It only makes sense since I enjoy PE more then E anyway. Does not matter I paid more for Edmundos I guess.
Now seriously: I am going to cut just one and smoke it pretending it is PE. I will report the findings here later.
