On a somewhat related topic... what about the JL Seleccion #1?
I haven't had the #1 and only had one #2 that I did not particularly like, but seeing that they are the corona gorda and robusto under the same name, I can't help but think of the Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion #3 (corona gorda) and Exhibicion #4 (robusto).
For the RyJ, I really didn't like the #4, but the #3 was surprisingly full of flavors. I brought this up to see if this could possibly be true for the JL as well; where the corona gorda could be better if not as pleasing as the robusto?
For those who have smoked both the JL Seleccion #3 and #4, can you comment? Thanks.
There must be something wrong with me... I really cannot see what is the fuss with the JL2... They are pretty decent cigars, great value for money, but nothing really special for stores to run out of stock...

as I said earlier, it is not CAs fault, it is people who trust CAs ratings more than their palates. Maybe it would help if people tried to do blind tastings at home... I have gone through 7 boxes the last few years, and have boxes from 06, 07, and 08. Never have found a JL2 to be a 94.. but I said, it is not CAs fault, they found something that they liked, what about those people who without even trying the cigar went and ordered whole boxes because CA said it was 94...

That is probably what happened and I don't necessarily blame them...Ordering singles or samplers, from my experience gets you the ugly ducks more often than not. However, just as in the wine world with Parker's ratings, CA's ratings have come to mean a lot to smokers. The rapid depletion of stocks proves this. CA, like Parker, has a lot of power in the cigar world.
Also, from my experience, I find this cigar to be very approachable and enjoyable. Would I rate it a 94? From my samples, no. Perhaps if I had Steve's sample or one of my own with the proper age, who knows?

Cigars are like wine, and vary from year to year and month to month. That is why CA lists the Box Code to help you get close to the box they rated. I lucked out and got 2 boxes near the box date they listed, and it probably helped that each box had almost 2 years of age on them.
But other people have JL #2's from 08 and they they really enjoy them right from the box with no aging.
As well, like wine, one man's (or woman's) pallet, may not be acceptable to another person, or as highly regarded.
I have only seen a couple of cigars hold the flavor profile from box to box during a year and that would be the Hoyo EL 2007 and the Cobiba Piramide El 2006.
I think Monti #2's are the most inconsistent from year to year and month to month. Life is like a box of Monti cigars, you never know what you are going to get.
Cor: Steve, you have proven yourself to be a tremendous whack job.
this is why although I think the M2 is a great cigar, I have stopped buying them. They are just too inconsistent, had too many dog rockets, though if you get a good one it a marvel to behold.
I have no idea what all the fuss is about the #2. I wanted to find out but all the trolls got em as soon as they came in. Actually that is fine with me because I think the #1's are so good I don't need to chase the #2s. Who needs #2s when the #1s are so incredible? And, in fact, the #1's are probably much better for my taste profile. I always thought that they were a premium cigar for over a year now, and way better than all the hype the other brands get on this board. I was surprised by Steve's post about the #2s. I thought to myself, "AH, people are finally taking notice to the Juan Lopez cigars".
For me The Juan Lopez #1's are absolutely awesome... snd I thank Mr. Savona for the recommendation awhile back.
so.. The #2s can go in the garbage baby! Viva JL #1s!
