gentelemen... I would like to hear from the people what have smoked either of those 2 cigars...

I have an opportunity to pick up a box of either (or maybe both.. but i haven't decided yet.. as i might want to get a box of esplendido or siglo 6 instead)..

both are cigar that i don't have lots of experience with.. I'd like your opinions on both of them.. but please, try and refrain from the "it's the best" recommendations.. I'd like some subjetive comments (burn issues, flavour profile, consistency, etc...).

price is not an issue.. as they are both hovering around 400-450$...

or should I just get both and skip the cohibas ?? I guess they are always going to be around.. and the older EL's are getting harder to find..

I think I'm personally leaning towards the Mag 50 and esplendido... but I'm not decided yet...

No experience with either, but from a scarcity point of view, the Magnum 50 is a lot harder to find than the Monte Robustos.

Sal,
I have not tried either one, but if given the opportunity, I would pass on the Esplendidos and get both of the ELs.

Like you said, the Esplendidos will be around for awhile, but the ELs won't.

Just my 2 cents...

PS - I'll trade you some Esplendidos for some of those ELs if you like.

that is true.. the Mag 50's are almost impossible to find..

on the otehr hand, I have never had one.. at least I've had some monte's.. but never the Mag's....

as for the esplendido being around.. and not the EL's.. what that is exactly was I was thinking.. but the price on the cohibas is really good too...

ahhhhhh.... too many choices....

Salibas,
I have had them both and can tell you that in my opinion, the Mag 50 smoked better out of the box than the Montecirsto did. And to BoKNows's point, the Mag 50s are in fact more difficult to obtain. However, the Mag 50 will be coming out this summer as a regular production cigar although it will not have the obligatory darkened wrapper that distinguish Edicion limitada cigars.
Also, are you particular to any sizes? Do you prefer robustos or super robustos? This consideration may help you make a decision.

actually I like both sizes....

i did consider the Mag 50's impending release.. but I'm sure not only will the wrapper be different.. but the blend as well... so I don't think it's fair to be comparing them to each otehrs...

also, in my eyes, the collector value of the Mag EL's (not for trade or resale.. just for my own personal satisfaction) does not compare to the regular production Mag 50...

I think the regular production Mag50s will make the EL Mag50s that much more desired for those interested in a comparison between the two. So yeah, grab them before they run out in a few months!

Of course the Limitada Mag 50s have the advantage of age and collectibility, but if you are just taking flavors into consideration, my vote is for the Upmanns.

Between Monte El 2006 and Mag50 EL 2005, I would choose Mag 50 EL 2005.

I also have had both, the Monte EL 2006 is to young IMHO.

But the HUM50 EL 2005 are now passing trough a sick period, since the last 2 Ive had, have been mediocre, also the wrappers on the open box I have right now look very rough.

If you want to get a better value, then I would chose the H Upmann since even do they will be a regular production, the limitadas version will be quite hard to get.

Also the H Upmann EL 2005, just like the PSD #2 EL, were a very small production,

As for the Monte EL Robusto, this is the second edition of the EL on the market, first 2000 and now 2006.

The Mag 50 EL 2005 is a huge cigar. I have one that I bought at the Partagas factory a few years ago, and have never smoked it. But, I have heard great things about it.

The Monti EL 2006 is a great Robusto, I bought a 10 pack and tried one. It was so good that I managed to get a box for $300 when my on-line supplier offered 12% off.

I asked for a box of oily Monti EL 2005 and they sent me a very oily box of reddish brown aromatic cigars, PUT JUL 06.

Monti EL 2005 on the right

I would highly recommend these cigars. Just my 300,000 cents.

Anyone has a picture of the HU Mag 50 EL 2005, since I would like to compare Wrappers, since I just opened another box and they are also quite rough wrappers, not the dark and oily we expect from the other limitadas.

I bought 3 M50s when they came out, still have one left... A true, incredible classic cigar, definitely in my top 5.

Oily, chocolaty brown, nicely impressive in size and shape. very earthy, almost peaty, complex flavors with a touch of spice and cinnamon. All on a solid espresso like background.

Go with it !

(I agree that the Monte is too young but, anyway, IMHO, much less impressive).

The Monti EL 2005 is not in my top 5 yet. But I believe it has great aging potential.

The way everyone is talking about the Mag 50 EL, I may have to light my single Mag 50 EL up some time this summer to see if the rumors are correct.

Go for the Mag 50 EL. You can do it!

And you can always bum a few Monti EL 2006's off me to see what you are missing.

I'm saving up my marbles for the Mag 50! I'm sure the wrapper will be just as good as the EL.
Any news yet on packaging and price?

hi Sal and All,

i have both and smoked both, neither have reached their full potential imo, i feel that any of the Darker Wrapper EL need longer to age and reach their full potential (just my Op) but based on rarity, Potential and current quality the Mag 50 is a street ahead. even though the regular production will be out soon (again only my opinion as i am a big fan of a good el) i think if you line up a 10yo Mag 50 (2015) and a 10 you reg production mag 50, the El will be a street ahead because of the wrapper.

GO FOR THE MAG 50 (or) buy them both.

Cohibas will be around any time you want

Spiro
