For those of you that have tried both Cuaba and Montecristo Open which do you like?

My choice was easy, the Montecristo Open. I bought a few singles at LCDH TJ yesterday and I was quite surprised with them. I have smoked a Regata and a Junior and they were both quite smooth. I think I found my favorite little 30 minute smoke in the Junior. On the other hand I also had bought a Cuaba Divinos and with previous Cuaba cigars smoked in the past, I have to say I just don’t like them. The construction and the burn were all good, it was just the flavor was not to my liking. I honestly don’t think I will ever spend my money on Cuaba anymore. On the other hand I am actually excited to smoke some of the other Monte Open. Hopefully they won’t disappoint.

I know many people don’t like Cuaba or the Monte Open, so of those that have smoked both which do you like the most or dislike the least?

If you have not tried the Monte Open yet, you should at least give a shot, you might be surprised.

Cuaba, sorry these just suck, I pitched the Divino after 15minutes. Didn’t even have the motivation to take a picture and waste MB’s on my computer hard drive.

for a 30 minutes smoke, I would recommend the por larranaga petite corona or the Partagas coronas senior over the monte open, have you tried either of them?

I have yet to try a PL (still on my list). I have a few of the Partagas Coronas Seniors and thought they were good. I guess I was really expecting the Monte Open to suck and was surprised when it didn't. I had passed over the Monte Open many times at LCDH and finally decided to try them. I tend to like light cigars and the Monte Open was just that. I think Habanos really did bad marketing with them and most people like myself expect them to be awful, which they were not to me.

By the way
I also have for some odd reason not been a big fan of the Cohiba Siglo 1. I dont know why I just have not had one that I have liked. It is too expensive for a quick everyday smoke anyways but even for a nice short smoke at a party it has not been to my liking. I have gotten many from many different places including Cuba and a few LCDH in different parts of Mexico and they have all been the same, boring. I do like Cohiba every now and then, just not the siglo 1. I will have to try the PL and I also bought a Sancho Panza non plus at LCDH that was cheap.

it's interesting how expectations can really influence our perception of cigars, or any product to be honest. I decided to purchase a monte open when I was in canada, smoked it and thought it was okay, I saw a video review that completely bashed it but it really wasn't that bad. I thought the green bands were hideous, anyways, for the price I like many other cigars better. but it makes sense if you like lighter cigars, and in that case you ought to really try the por larranaga, mild cigar, not greatly complex but very refreshing on the palate.

yea, I actually have never had a siglo I, i've had all the others ones except the VI. From what I hear siglo I is very, very different from the rest of the siglos. To be honest I was disappointed with the siglos I've had, flavors were somewhat muted and to my understanding they need some serious aging before they peak. I have a dozen or so singles that I won't touch for a while. But the cohiba robusto on the other hand, spectacular cigar even when young.

Now you really have me wanting a PL!!!! In two weeks I will be heading back and will be on the look out for them.

I also agree that they should just get rid of the ugly open band and leave them as Montecristos

I really like the Cuaba line. I find their construction and burn is always good. I like the flavours, grassy in a good way.
The Divinos are actually my favourite, nice full bodied little smoke.

Jose- I agree. As the word has gotten out about the Monte Open, more and more inquirys come in from folks who thought the it would be a boring cigar. It's not. Its more complex than the Fonseca and richer then the R&J Coronitas. Another tasty midday cigar on the market.

Cheers

Hola Jose,

Thanks for the review. To be honest something happens on my mind that turn off my desire to try the Open line.

I was thinking to wait some time in order to let the boxes on my LCDH to age more and then buy some singles for tasting.

Anyway I had enjoy the Cuaba´s in the past very much. All of them with decent age, never young.

Thanks again and I guess I will give a chance to the Open line and try.

You speak spanish right? where you family come from? if you don´t mind.

Xavier,
Mi familia es de Guadalajara. A huevo que hablo espanol, Arriba las Chivas!!!!

I have tried a few of the Cuaba cigars and none have done it for me. I haven't tried the Piramide EL08 and should at least give it a shot.

Juanpablo,
I have smoked the Generosos and the Exlusivos, do you think the Distinguidos is better?

The cuabas I've tried I thought was okay, for the price there are better cigars out there. But I guess they need a lot of aging. man, I wish I had some PLs but I am all out as well. Btw, if I could recommend a cigar to try if you haven't, is the H. Upmann mag 50, definitely not a 30 minute smoke Wink, but excellent!

i also am not a huge fan of the Cuaba line although the EL 08 is a fantastic cigar! great flavors and one of the smoothest smokes ever! As far as the monte open line goes. I have tried all of them and my favorites was the master. Had some great flavors and was stronger than i anticipated. Although the eagle had the nicest construction and look to it, the taste was the worst out of all of them, very bland. The junior and the regata were decent too but the robusto ( master ) was the best!

Veggie, While i don't know your taste compared to mine I highly recommend the Distinguidos. I have had the Exclusivos as well. The smaller Cuabas have a herbal/grassy taste that the larger shapes dont carry. I think the Distinguidos is a great smoke to enjoy after a nice steak dinner. If you do decide to try one let me know what you think.
