I always buy at my local shop. 2 good reliable ones here in Calgary (there are more, but I can't vouch for them), or when I'm out of the country(usually Dubai).
There has been rumours that one popular shop has sold fakes. Never bought anything there, but have been in to check it out. Tough to call. I saw some smokes that I would suspect, but I'm no expert.
I'm leary about trying the on-line thing. First you have to find a reputable source, then by the time you're finsihed with the exchange on the dollar, taxes and duties your no further ahead, so why bother?

Ahh in T.O. theres a place on Bayview called the Smoking Cigar. Great shop, good prices, crazy specials on saturdays. Esplenditos were at like 60-73 dollars canadian. Beautiful walk-in humidor. And a nice lounge as well to smoke them in. Sit down on leather and watch the hunt for red october on the big screen. Enjoy the smoke, enjoy the atmosphere, just bloody enjoy it.
So online is not a safe bet then? Didn't think it would be so easy either. Duties are so high anyways. Maybe the dealer can write gift and you'll get lucky, but at what risk. I figure, if I want a couple of boxes of cigars, I just have to take a 1 week trip for $600 or so and get them there. Averages out to a little more but you get a free trip!!
BTW anybody going down there anytime in the next 6 months? I need to get a box of Siglo II for my wedding party for May. A box of Siglo VI would be even better but they don't apprecaite cigars like I do, so why waste them when I can KEEP them

Where did you go in Cuba? Myself I'm heading off again in November (Varadero). Anyhow I'm still new to this forum, just thought I would stop and say hello to a fellow Canadian.

Ottawakid; What's up! We got a good bunch of guys here, good call on saying hi. You going in Nov? varadero? I went to the Cayo's a month ago, 2 weeks of PARADISE! I typed up a review of Cuba and cigars, check it out: http://www3.sympatico.ca/martymix/ let me know what you think. Ohh and if you're gonna get smokes there. We have a guy Placido over there who can hook you up. Read the site and post back.

Slightly alinged to the discussion of Cuba: If anyone is going and willing to bring back a box for a fellow Canuck, let me know. I will pay up front of course but my prospects of heading to Cuba anytime in my foreseeable future looks bleak.

Well hopefully after my schooling (two months left), i will be heading off to Cuba. Going to pick up a nice box or two of Siglo VI sit on the beach and get fed grapes like a Caeser(well maybe not)lol. Im probably going to Veradero, just wondering, when is the best time to go to Cuba.
I can't believe you guys consistantly pay that much for cigars! I only fork out that much if I buy a single , which is very infrequently. Jeez take a vacation to Cuba it's not that expensive, while you are there you and your partner can bring back enough cigars to make up for a good part of the cost of the trip .

Greetings from Ottawa. I have canvassed the whole city and found that the best quality and prices are actually at United Cigar stores located in the major malls. Prices at Loblaws are ridiculous and the quality is often questionnable. Forget all the stores in the market area since they cater to US tourists and peddle fakes at MSRP.
Beware the "Cuban cigars at discount prices" signs. You really have to do some investigating when you are shopping. Ussually if the store has a big sign advertising CUBAN CIGARS then you will want to stay away. At least that is the case in Southern Ontario. I don't know what the deal is in Ottawa at Loblaws. Down this way, the prices are right in line with lcdh and most other reputable tobacconists. Is it like a bag of chips is 1.99 here and 3.99 in Ottawa, or are we just talking a couple of bucks?

Fisher: I was first I need a box (or half of one) of Siglo II for my wedding in May. I'll got ell my mommy on you!!
C.Dal: ANYTIME is a good time to go. If you go in winter, it will cost you more. If you go in summer it will cost you less. In Cuba, it doesn't matter when you go, it's always PARADISE! (stay away around now, usually hurricane season until Sept) I caught hurricane George a few years back when I went in August. Pretty cool except we got moved to Ciego D'avila in a half star hotel with cockraoches, no windows (only window panes which water came in through) and no hot water. At least they had Heineken at the bar!!
So were you planning on getting some smokes? Did you like the site?

Marty: I'd say hurrican season goes well into Oct starting around the end Aug or possibly sooner in some cases. We know that here in the merry times, as we get the tail end of most of em.
Can a displaced canuck join in here? I've lived in Geneva for a few years now, but still get back to Calgary every once in a while to visit family and friends. I almost cried when I saw prices there: I don't think I will ever be able to buy cigars in Canada again. Love the beef, though. Mmmmmm, beef....
