Get this, the U.S. Treasury Department has come out and said, that any American citizen can be put in jail for up to 10 years, and fined up to$250,000.00 for smoking a Cuban cigar while in Canada. This is absolutely true, and absolutely bizarre. This is so typical of the U.S. government's heavy-handed stance,on anything they don't like.Apparently these new laws are now posted on the U.S. Treasury Department's Web site. .How bizarre.

Or London, or Mexico City, or Madrid, or Beirut, or Gibraltar, or anywhere else. I guess this means that those letters people get from the government when they have their packages seized are more than just wallpaper.

yes it is actually law, you can read about it on the site. is it going to be enforced? well, i sure as hell won't be taking it seriously. if the u.s. sent someone to watch the stores to make sure that we don't buy cigars in canada or any other "third party country," they can take me away in cuffs.

I told my wife about this and thought it was really funny. What are they going to do, have agents in all these countries? Is this an additional job for the CIA??
Just another perfect example of why I am and vote Libertarian!!

....about our troops smoking Cubans overseas. Truth be told, I was reading an article on the Marine Corps website not long ago, about Marines in Fallujah. A young Corporal stated during the interview that as things began to settle down after some intense clashes, he and members of his platoon would unwind by smoking Cuban cigars sold by the "mobile exchange" that would make periodic visits to their position. I one of the photos, you see him with an RyJ A/T Churchill and box.
Years ago, while stationeed in Japan and Iceland, I was a familiar face to a couple of shop owners. In fact, so good a customer that I would find myself at their family dinners!
If any of you feel pangs of guilt, I'd be happy to help you atone by accepting your cigars and ensuring their proper disposal,.....that is in my continuing effort to uphold and defend the Constitution, of course.

So much for your choices in November: lots of goevernment or even more government. I hope that it won't be too much longer before you are able to have leaders with the courage to see the embargo for what it is, and end it for your sakes and for the Cubans'.

Does anyone have reliable info on having received the dreaded letter? Any further reprecussions? (sp) Is there a different letter for repeat violations? If so would it be more severe? I'm curious to know if anyone has that kind of info or experience, 1st or 2nd hand.
Thought I saw some CIA brown-shirts up here the other day scouting out some local cuban cigar shops.
They were packing stun-guns, hand guns are illegal up here, and seemed prepared to pounce on anyone exiting the shops shouting "I am a yankee and I am smoking these fine Cuban cigars".
Although no-one was actually arrested we did sell the CIA fellas some winter parkas and some snow-shoes for the long winter ahead.
I will keep you posted on any and all future developments.
I shared a cigar with a fellow and his wife from Texas this week - we were at the Banff Springs Hotel - in Canada. He was a Chaplan and former officer of the law. When I told him about this new development, he was smoking a Cuban cigar at the time, he actually said " God dammit I have been a Republican my whole life and I will burn in hell before Bush gets my vote". His wife was a bit shocked at his outburst - both are in their 70's and I don't think he is a man given to using profanity.
I am not very familiar with US politics but he said Bush was pandering to a political minority in Florida to buy their vote.
He was not amused - I gave him a Monte #2 to take home with him.
