Last year a buddy gave me a Monty No.1. Im looking for a similar cigar here in the States that I might enjoy as much as that one. Where should I start?

I've tried the No.1 white label and I wasnt impressed that much...

No relationship to the Cuban Monte #1 except for the name.

It's just not going to happen. Yes, that sound cold, but it's true, there is just no comparison to a Cuban Monte. Now this is a stretch, but I'll throw it out there. I was recently given a Padilla Miami in a trade with someone on board here. I like the thing so much I have been infatuated with the brand ever since, trying everything I can. I would even venture to say that this cigar is the closest thing to a cuban I've ever had- Its damn good. Try the Padilla Signature 1932 Toro. Remember, you asked for one that you would enjoy as much and this, I think, it is as close as you can get. Now the problem is that they cost more than the Monte #1, by about 50%. Still a damn good smoke!!

Why not just get a box of Monte No. 1?

Hang on tightly, let go lightly

Yes and no... there are some good legal choices for the "cuban flavor" profile. As mentioned above... Padilla, Tatuaje, Cabaiguan are some good brands to start with. All rolled under the eye of Don Pepin, a blender/roller who left cuba a some years ago.

IMO, anyone would be hard-pressed to find any NC with a "Cuban flavor" profile. The closest thing would be the Tatuaje's from Miami and they're not even all that similar. Definitely not similar to Cuban Monte 1's by any stretch...at least not to my palate.

I am not an expert on cuban cigars by any means. But from what i have tried Elaw is right, the Padilla 8/11 and 1932 is the closest.
