I've read that the wrapper color can vary slightly in a box, getting darker going from right to left. I recently passed on a box of PSDs because the color change was very pronounce on the top row. Also, the foots did not appear to be uniformally cut having slight angle variations. Everything else appeared to be OK. For future reference, are these normal acceptable variations within a single box? Thanks.

to a certain extent size can and will vary in a box; however, the feet should be cut straight...that is one of the things they look for.

Color variation is also normal, and yes, there should be a slight gradient in terms of color, darker to left, lighter to right. Sometimes, people mix and match cigars in a box...for example, if they're looking through several boxes, they might like one box in particular, but the box as a couple of cigars that are underfilled or have other defects...so they take those out and put in good ones from another box. That is not cool, but I have seen it being done...it messes up the way the box was intended to be presented, and it makes it worse for the next guy. Perhaps you were the next guy. Maybe it was a box of suspect origin. Could be anything...but in answer to your question, size and color variations are commonplace, albeit the differences and variations are or should be slight.

Well, I guess since you asked the question in the first place, you are aware that every effort is taken to insure that there are no discernable color variations in the first layer, and if so, yes they will go from one side to the other. Even angled feet are no sure test, but again, they DO try to be consistent and accurate.
As it's been said, this is Cuba where anything is possible. I am curious about which number of Serie D you are speaking of.

I think you made the right call on passing, especially if you have ample opportunity to get a box another time from a better source. This is a prestige cigar that should be one of the last to show such anamolies (sp).

Thanks also to ryj7x47 for the info!

I didn't see your post originally, only NoLa's. Very strange.

I agree with ryj....

if you do see a BIG difference it will usually be in the bottom row. The top row should not have any big breaks in the color changes between adjacent cigars.

The feet not cut straight would be a MAJOR concern for me.

Thanks bohdank.

The box was sealed and open in front of me. I'm glad I passed. I did pick up some singles from another source and they have been fantastic. Now my only problem is whether to hold them or smoke them. Big Grin
