I would love to be able to review a cigar to that extent. What does earth taste like? I've always read those reviews but my palate cannot distinguish those tastes. Smooth or harsh is basically what I can tell. How do u guys refine your palate besides just smoking a lot? How can I distinguish certain tastes like cedar and earth?

nasa25, I think besides smoking a lot more cigars (which is not a bad thing btw) the only other thing I can recommend is to get to know what each of the common flavors smells like. What I mean by that is that a huge part of tasting is from smell, remember when you have a cold you can still taste salt, sweetness, bitterness, sourness, but beyond that you really don't know what's what? In the same way, many flavors are tasted through your sense of smell just like when you eat. So to me, cedar and earth taste like, or more accurately, smell like, cedar and earth. And as for smoothness or harshness, I just posted about the way Oliva V torpedos have a caramel taste, that I believe is mainly because of the feel on my tongue as the smoke lingers, which is similar to what it would feel to have caramel on your tongue. Texture is a huge part of tasting also. As I learned more about cigars, I realized the difference between harshness and spices. If the tingle is just on your tongue, then that's spices, but if it feels like there's an uncomfortable sensation or a lump in your throat, then that's harshness. Hope this helps

Thanks for the explanation. That does give me much more of feel for what I should be looking for...I really appreciate your help with this. I've learned more about cigars over the past two days than in the last 5 years reading various cigar magazines.

also is it better to hold the smoke in your mouth for a little while (like I do) or to puff and let out the smoke almost immediately (like I see Suckling and Mott do)?

No problem nasa25 I'm glad to help you out. Feel free to ask any questions, while I'm not veteran by any means I think I could help you out a lil to get you speed along. As for your question, I think it's reall up to the individual, I normally let the smoke linger for two to three seconds before letting it out slowly, I don't blow it out because I want to be able to get some aroma from my nose as the smoke passes. And I also blow some smoke out of my nose every 10 to 15 puffs to get a better taste, it's going to sting at first but it's a great way to get a better taste. Of course I also learned there are a few cigars that you wouldn't want to do this with.

wow....thanks for all or your help dstokely. Between researching the proper lighting and your help on the tasting and puffing I think I will be a much more competent cigar smoker on the next one I light up (I'm eyeing either a monte 2 or maybe that hDm mag 50 el that's been calling my name from my humi)

Only the Monti.

Tell us what you think of them as you smoke them. How about a couple of pictures?

I have boxes of all of these at the moment, and my favorite is the San Cristobal, it is a very different taste than the others, my next favorite is the Upmann, then the BBF.

I believe these cigars are called "Figurados".

Im gonna let these babies rest for a while. Ill post some pics soon as well. They all arrived in perfect condition except for the Murulla's. One had a tiny crack in the foot (not a big deal), the other close to the cap. Im gonna try to smoke the latter first, but first Ill need to free up 2 hours or more, those babies are BIG!
