I'm in Canada so these might be ok but I goggled the exact type and it turns out they are the most counterfeited in the world = makes me wonder. As well, the guy who sold me this one has a very small selection in a convenience store and sold it at a pretty good price after suddenly getting a couple of boxes out of the blue.

So basically I don't know if he's for real or if he's just selling fakes someone got him and truthfully, I haven't had one before (well, once many, many years back) so I have little to compare it to regardless.

I'm curious as to if anyone can tell the difference by a couple of pics. I did take a look at the box and it looks right - all wood, lacquered, official looking seals, etc and the band itself has raised gold lettering.

What do you think? I really don't want to cut one open to find out.

BTW I hate to ask but if I just smoked it would the "Cohiba amazingness" shine through to anyone and the answer become clear anyway? Keep in mind I've only been getting into cigars for a while now and have little experience with higher end Cubans.

Appreciate any insights

If you got these from a convenience store for a "good price" than 99% chance they are not legit.

Who told you that cutting a cigar open is a way to determine if it's a CC?????? I would much rather smoke a fake than destroy any cigar.

One telling factor in deciding if it's real CC is if it has a triple cap or not.

The wrapper and band seem to look legit...

Why people can't take focused pictures is beyond me.

Another more obvious "telling" factor is opening it up to find short filler & scraps inside.

yes, Rick, cutting it open what decide where the tobacco is from, but it will tell you if all the tobacco is long filler, or a mixture of short filler and long filler (which is a tell-tale sign of a fake)

It is most certainly real. I can tell judging solely on the ultra-sharp photograph you posted.

I don't think one needs to look at the pictures, or cut it open or smoke one. The red flags are soooo obvious:

I agree V.O.
Naranga probably answers his own question with this statement.
quote:
a couple of boxes out of the blue

While there are plenty of convenience stores in this country with legit cubans (mainly tubed Romeo and Monte), "out of the blue" sounds suspect.
Do you know the store owner well enough to ask him where he got them and get honest answer?
If the answer goes anything like "some guy", I would imagine they are quite likely fake.

by the pic, this looks like an esplendido...

convenience stores around here are rampant with these cohiba .. most sell them at 29 or 30$ each...

200% of them are fakes... in fact, the only cigars that might be real in these convience stores are the tubed ones; and you should be very wary of those as well....

But their fireworks are all legit. And they are easy to test.

So, essentially there's no way to really tell then short of slicing and dicing.

Well, like I said, the band and box looked legit but the store and conditions of the sale a bit suspect. The guy selling them is actually a very nice guy so truthfully, I doubt he's selling fakes knowingly.

Well, I guess I'll just have to smoke it then and hope for the best!

Naranga just smoke one and you will know. If it tastes like crap, after 10 puffs, put it out and dissect it.

Otherwise enjoy the smoke. You never know, some variety store owners sell the real thing although they are not licenses to sell Habanos.
