So, I'm looking to take a road trip to Montreal soon, and I'd like to know where to pick up a box or two of Cohibas or Uppmans or Montys.
Also, where is the best place to pick up vintage cigars?
Finally, where is the best place to enjoy cigars in a comfortable environment? I hear great things about Whisky Cafe, but is there anywhere else? Is Whisky NOT what it's cracked up to be?
for cigars, there really isn't a better place to buy than the LCDH (next to the corner of Sherbrook and Bishop). they'll have the best selection, the cheapeast price (as they have the smallest mark-up) and all the vintage you can immagine.. antique humidors, collection books, jars, EL's, RE's... everything..
only problem with that it'll cost you an arm and a leg to buy anything, as out taxes are insane
to enjoy your cigar, well you can smoke at the LCDH, but you have to buy from them.. the lounge is very quite, and you'll rarely find more than 4 or 5 people in there.
you mentioned Whiskey Cafe.. they have a very nice lounge and the biggest selection of scotch you'll find in montreal.. they are a bit outside down-town, so areusually quit as well.. they charge a 10$ clipping fee per cigar.
then there's my favourite STOGIES (corner Crescent & Maisonneuve.. also a 5 min walk from the LCDH). It is by far the best place to hang out and smoke in town. in fact, it's our official montreal HERF location .. it's in the middle of down-town, on the same street as all the bars and clubs . it is very quite during the week nights.. but gets a little busy on week-ends... they have a very nice walk-in with a good selection, and their prices aren't too marked up .. but you can also smoke your own with no clipping fee.. they have about 50 different bottles of Scotch on hand, over 100 different martinis and quite a selection of draught beer...
let me know if you need some other recommendations... in fact, there are a few montrealers on this forum, so i'm sure they'll chime in with their recommendations..
but for cigars smoking, you are limited to 5 spots in town (2 of which are in restaurants)
also, be careful with fakes, as there are quite a few of those floating around in the touristic areas and most convenience stores

Later!
BTW Winnipagan Whiskey is more the "relax, sophisticated" place and STOGIES is basically a club with an upper lounge on top...
hey wizard... you should've mentioned something earlier .. just last night we had a super HERF at stogies...
as for whiskey-cafe.. well they try and pretend like it’s an upscale place.. but it really isn’t.. you find all sorts of people in there nowadays.. from the 18year old frat boys to the 60 year old doctor….
Stogies isn’t a lounge over a club.. in fact, they are a lounge over a pub… on the first floor, they have an English style pub with all the draught beer you can imagine.. then over that, you have 2 floors of cigar lounges.. when I said it gets busy, I didn’t mean busy like a club.. just more people than the usual.. more smoke and louder music..
I was up 2 weeks ago and must throw my recommendation behind Stogies over Whiskey Cafe. The LCDH is very nice and the taller gentleman who works there is very knowledgeable and loves to talk cigars. I felt guilty I did not buy any sticks but I had my own and the prices are out of this world.

hey you're right flash... i should've email you... sorry about that bro.. but you really should check HB more often.. this is where we always organise our HERFS.. there simply aren't enough locals on here .. mind you there are more and more these days... maybe I should start posting about our HERFS over here as well....
mind you I only found out about it 2 days ago.... I even had to cancel on the inlaws as QM was handing down some monster 9x54 customs, an I just couldn't let that pass

Flash, that would be great. I'll be arriving on Wednesday June 4th and leaving on Saturday the 7th. Staying at The Omni-Mont Royal which is a few blocks from La Casa. I have a lot of little push pins on my Google Earth map ;]

I'm on vacation at those dates, so I'll most certainly be available at one time or other -- depending on waht the wife has in store for me. I'll e-mail you next week so we can check it out.

dunno why there's so much whiskey cafe hate in this thread.. it definitely has a classier vibe and to be quite honest you're more likely to see frat boys at stogies imo.. perhaps stogies during the week is alright but during the weekends they often BLAST annoying dance music and you're pretty much hanging out with a lot more tourists/cheesebags on crescent. whiskey cafe after a meal at some of the incredible wine bars in the viscinity is more my thing.

Stogies has advantages for week evening smokeouts. You can bring your own cigars. Lots of room, lots of leather seats, May to Sep the balconies, windows and sliding glass doors are open. We were ten there last Thursday. It is rarely over crowded and they have a free buffet.
As for the cheesebags. Crescent is a mostly anglophone crowd so its mostly teabags. Not cheesebags.
QM Quality does not occur by chance. It is the result of intelligent activities.
