I've noticed the OFAC fines for individuals have been declining across the board. The $ amounts, frequency, and number of individuals. Seemed like 2-3 yrs ago OFAC was really hammering people, now they seem to be drastically tallying off.
Is OFAC redirecting there focus elsewhere, running out of names, or just having a harder time catching people?

for those of you who are not aware... a recent GAO report (sponsored by congress people Charles Rangel (Brooklyn NY) and Barbara Lee (oakland CA)- came out very critical on customs and the OFAC
In a nutshell they were very critical of customs and OFAC for having an extraordinary and disporportionate amount of cuban violations compared to the many other sanction programs...
and the report also raised much concern as to why these "non-terrorist" actions enforcement were somehow a priority of customs and OFAC - when countires such as n. korea and iran, possed a far greater national security threat than people going to cuba or buying cigars... (amen brother!!!)
although everyone knows correlation does ont equal causation...but if you look at this months OFAC actions - it appears that Iran is in the crosshairs.
i waouldnt say it's 100% safe, but it looks as if the tide is turning...lets hope with a new admin in 2008 things will get even better...
I just bought some laptops from Dell Canada...and although we really don't give a sh!t about a computer making it's way to Iran, Syria or North Korea, this Canadian telephone saleswoman asked me as part of the pre-amble whether I was going to export my computers to the Axis of Evil???? Now who in the hell cares? My God. Dell is an American based company, the government is obviously targetting the computer companies again. My god, I have bought a dozen computers from these folks over the years. Sometimes direct from the US when there were advantages with the dollar markets...but I have never had that before....I asked the gal....If I was going to send this to Korea....should I address it to someone special?????
Korea develops a nuclear bomb....do they need Dell laptops now!?!??!?!?!?!!?!?

Governments at work....
You seem to have cunningly avoided the pertinent question: Are you going to export your laptops to the axis of evil? Well? ARE YOU? I'm going to tell on you.

And YES I am selling all my computers to Fidel, Knuckelhead from Iran and DoffTop from Korea....who do you think sends DoffTop (AKA Glorious Leader) his Louis XIV cognac...everyone knows Canada is like the cheapest place to buy it...and Glorious Leader is short of authentic american dollars at the moment...his counterfeit stuff doesn't fly down at the corner store anymore here in rural Saskatchewan....
Ouch, I knew luck had to run out sooner or later. Sucks to be the guy that got hit for $5K for buys he made from Nov 04-Jul 06.

Were these people that tried to claim shipments intercepted or does a violator just wake up one morning with a knock on the door? 4 years later no less? Anyone?
