Hello everyone!

Where are some good places in Cancun to get cigars? I'm heading down there next month and wanted to be prepared.

Thanks everyone!

For what it's worth:

Cancun thread.

I've never been there; enjoy yourself.

La Casa del Habano is the ONLY place in Cancun to get legitimate Cuban cigars. Every taxi driver, bellman, bartender, street vendor and shopkeeper down there will tell you different. Don't believe them....they're just out to make a buck and sell you a crappy Mexican or Dominican cigar with a Cuban band on it.

LCDH=legit Cuban cigars. Everywhere else in Cancun, and I mean EVERYWHERE, no matter how nice the shop looks=fakes.

There is an LCDH in Playa del Carmen as well, if you find yourself down that way.

Pace, do you mean cigars that can be bought in the US when you said "american made cigars"? The answer is no since those cigars are only popular in the US due to the embargo. You won't find much of them anywhere else in the world. The La Casa del Habanos only sell CCs since they are owned by Habanos S.A. which is run by the Cuban government.

The LCDH in Cancun is historical, it was the first one built and it was not built by the Cubans. Max Gutman, the distributor of CC in Mexico told me the story abuot how he built the LCDH in Cancun before the LCD franchises. The Cubans liked it so much they asked if they could copy his idea, he agreed but they would not pay for it. And that is the story of the first LCDH. Max is also one of the finest gentlemen in the cigar world.

That's very interesting information, thanks! Actually I'm going to that Cancun LCDH shortly. I'll keep the name of Max Gutman in mind on my visit.

That's awesome. I might have to go while my wife has a massage at the hotel. She will not want to stay too long and I'll get caught up in that store.

I can't believe how helpful everyone is. Much appreciated for this newbie to the forum.

What might be some "good" cigars to get in Cancun? I tend to like the heavier cigars.

Thanks.

It will be a fully stocked cigar shop so try some of the Partagas and Bolivar cigars. They are supposed to be some of the strongest ( I assume you equate heavy with strong full flavor) brand blends. I also think the sig 6 is an amazing cigar, the Don Alejandro which is a DC in the Robaina line is well worth the time as well, great cigars.

I had a Cohiba, can't remember the rest, that a friend of mine brought back from France. It was a little light but it tasted amazing. I've got one left in my humidor waiting for the right moment.

While you're there, why not try as many different cigars as you can? I'd suggest trying Cuban cigars of all strengths and sizes so that you can truly appreciate the varied flavors and the complexities of Cuban tobacco.

My advice that I give to anyone who has yet to try many Cuban cigars is to start trying as many different ones as possible rather than solely relying on others' taste buds to tell you what you might like. Rely on your own taste buds and have fun finding out what YOU like! It's really a great adventure and you may discover a few lesser-known favorites that you otherwise would not have tried.

However, I will list a few mild, medium and full-bodied cigars here and would suggest you try at least one from each category in order to realize that Cuban cigars of ALL strengths and sizes can be very enjoyable.

Mild: ERDM Choix Supreme or Lunch Club, anything Quai d'Orsay, anything Fonseca

Medium: RyJ Tubo No. 1 or Exhibicion 4, Montecristo 3, La Gloria Cubana Medaille d'Or #2, St. Luis Rey Serie A

Full: Partagas Serie du Connoisseur #3, RyJ Cazadore (very strong, not for everyone), Vegas Robaina Unico, Bolivar Corona Extra

But again, bottom line, try as many different cigars as your budget allows and have fun!

You can smoke at the shop. There is a good mex restaurant next door (La Distileria, try the tequila here). Not the original shop Max was talking about, this is where they relocated to. Across from Plaza Kulkulkan.

Everything is legit. Mostly cuban.

I actually find NC's are more expensive outside the US.

Enjoy!
o, there is als a bar in there...kinda sounds like heaven huh!?!
