Been reading in the 3rd edition of Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia that since 2003 all Habanos boxes designated for export from Cuba have a prominent hologram embossed on the top of the box. Dunno how to explain my experience to the contrary with shipments that are clearly genuine (long story short) and wonder if this could be some sort of grey market situation I've encountered or whether perhaps I am just misreading the Perelman's info.

The Hologram is self adesive and not embossed. It is applied to cigar boxes for domestic Cuban sales and not export.

If that's what the Perelman book states, it is incorrect. As kechke said, the Cuban holograms are only affixed to boxes intended to be sold IN Cuba. They are not placed on boxes to be exported.

Wow, thanks for the speedy clarification. I think the Perelman's info amounts to a poorly worded statement about how they mark the boxes in Havana for checking at the customs station when you leave the country. But because they use the word "export" I took the meaning wrongly. Thanks again.

Yeah, they mean for personal export... you must have a hologram on the box as well as a receipt when leaving cuba with Habanos, otherwise suffer confiscation.

Not quite true, only for a full box. If you are exporting less than one full box it does not require a "Factura de Venta de Habanos'

Sure, you're right, but I'm guessing they were talking about an actual box.
Is Cuba putting health warnings on, or is it the importers that are forced to do it? I know in Canada, we have our lovely health warning placed on by Havana House, but is there health warnings on boxes bought in Cuba?

No. Those are placed on the boxes when they reach their respective destinations...i.e. Canada, Australia, Germany, etc.
