Another comedic genius passes on...Harvey Korman.

Lamarr: I've decided to launch an attack that will reduce Rock Ridge to ashes.

Taggart: What do you want me to do, sir?

Lamarr: I want you to round up every vicious criminal and gunslinger in the west. Take this down: I want rustlers, cutthraots, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, half-wits, dim-wits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, horse wagglers, horse thiefs, bulldykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass kickers, shiit kickers, and Methodists!

Taggart: Could you repeat that, sir?

yea what a bummer. All that's left from that movie is Mel, Gene, and Dom.

Harvey was great as the evil capitalist, and Cleavon was brilliant as the sheriff, and the reversal of Black and White stereotypes. Probably Mels best movie ever.

Not just that...THE best movie of all time. Citizen Kane? Nah! Sierra Madre? Nah! Godfather? Well, maybe... Blues Brothers? Close. Animal House? Possibly an equal. But Blazing Saddles...BLAZING SADDLES...

In my misspent youth I lived in a SoCal neighborhood where lived both Korman and Tim Conway (Lyle Waggoner, too...).

And the thing of it was...Korman was a cigar guy!

How about this little exchange:

Hedley Lamarr:

"My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives."

Taggart (Slim Pickens):

"Gol-darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue purtier than a twenty dollar whore."

Or this one:

Taggart: "I got it! I know how we can run everyone out of Rock Ridge."

Lamarr: "How?"

Taggart: "We'll kill the first born male child in every household."

Lamarr: "Too Jewish."

You weren't the only one who he made laugh on Carol Burnett. I think the best part of the show always was when Korman would crack up Conway and vice versa.

Do you thing Blazing Saddles would even make it past a script in today's society? The thing is, even with all the racist jokes, it was really making fun of racism itself, not any race or religion. It is definitely one of the funniest movies ever. Pure genius.

Eric,

Sadly, you're right. A year or so ago, I watched Blazing Saddles on American Movie Classics (AMC). Not only did they censor the handfull of expletives, they censored every single racial word too (like all of the n-words, chink, etc.). It absolutely ruined the best movie ever made. And, as you said, the movie wasn't racist but made fun of racism. It's sad how hyper-PC Hollywood has become.
