I have a family member whos living in Mexico for the next year for work and will be coming up to the beach with us.
I want to ask him to bring back a box of Cuban cigars. Just curious as to any tips to give him, such as only buying from LCDHs and other "rules" that you experienced men know.

Also, I'm wondering what would be a good, classic, cuban cigar that I would want a box of?(Monte #2s?), and how much should I expect to pay per box in USD?

Thanks

This question has been asked quite a bit lately. Definitely only buy from an LCDH in Mexico. That's the ONLY way you can be assured of getting legitimate Cuban cigars. Doing otherwise is risky; very risky. I know there is an LCDH in Tiajuana and Cancun. The same guy owns both. I have been to the Cancun shop and it's great! It's a must see if you're in town. It has a full bar, very well stocked humidor, and a small pool which overlooks the water.

A box of Monte 2's will run you about $275 +/-. These are great cigars and prices in Mexico are about 10 - 15% higher than anywhere else. It's tough to walk away when they're sitting right there in front of you though!

Tell David, the owner, that Tim said hi. Wink

Hm, I know he isn't staying near Cancun, I remember hearing that it was in very central mexico, so I think that rules out Tijuana as well.

Hopefully there will be a LCDH near him! Any other suggestions on cigars?

$190 USD in Havana? No. $190 USD = $152 CUC. You can't even get robustos for that these days...well, maybe you did. Where did you pick up a box like that?

The Dufry shops in the Mexico City airport are legit in my experience. They have prices as good as most on the internet. I can't comment on other duty free shops at other airports. Of course, your friend will have to carry them through customs, which will risk confiscation.

I bought mine at a store near the factory while on a cigar tour. They ARE authentic. I also bought a box of RyJ #2 cedros for $160 USD. You had me second guessing myself so I checked my receipts and I am right on within a couple of bucks.

What do you mean with if I am sure?
Let me post some pricing examples of the LCDH in Mexico City:

Cohiba Piramide (10) $3,372 MN ($307 USD)
Edmundo Petit (25) $3,044 MN ($277 USD)
Diplomaticos No. 2 $4,060 MN ($370 USD)
898V Partagas $4,444 ($404 USD)
Bolivar Bonitas $1,980 MN ($180 USD)
Montecristo No. 3 $3,661 ($333 USD)

I dont know in Cancun or TJ, but the owner of this LCDH in Mexico City is Max.

Best regards,

Xavier
