I recently found a half box of Romeo y Julieta Perfectos in my father's humidor. He passed away recently and I inherited them. I took them to a local shop and was told they are 1936. But was skeptical of the shopkeeper. Can anyone help me?
Well, is there any kind of indication on the box as to the name of the cigar (besides the brand), printed codes or dates, seals or duty stamps? How does the band look compared to the "genuine" example in the Counterfeit Gallery on this site?
And in what shape are the cigars?

The remaining cigars are in good shape. the box is in good shape. the box has a duty stamp in good shape. there is one extra band in the box that looks a little different than the one in the Gallery but I have to belive that these are the real deal as my father has had these cigars for many years. there are some numbers on the bottom of the box... 8/6. the name on the box lid is Romeo Y Julieta... DE ALVEREZ y GARCIA... HABANA

Well, the Perfectos are still made -- machine-made -- by R y J, so, not a discontinued model that could be dated to a precise time limit.
However, cellophane was first used on Cuban cigars in 1934, so it has to be more recent than that.
The seal may suggest that it is at least pre-revolution (pre-1959) but, on the bottom of the box, does it say "Made in Havana-Cuba" (pre-1961) or Hecho en Cuba (post-1961) ?

Maybe 'Great Expectations' can give you a hand with the dating thing...?

One thing is for sure : those cigars have been made after 1934 -- when cellophanes were introduced in cigar production -- and before 1961 (because of the "Made in Habana-Cuba").
Other than that, I can find nothing that would put a year as precise as 1936. The stamp only refers to the date of the law on warranty seals.
But I would guess that it was indeed made in the earlier days of cellophane, since the word is so prominently printed -- so as to make it seem like an important novelty feature.
