I am looking for a new humidor. Mine is cheap and I need an upgrade badly. I know that I can post this on other boards but I value your opinion due to the value of your cigars. I have been impressed with the Daniel Marshalls that I have seen and wanted to get your opinions good or bad. Thanks

Madhatr,

Cheap doesn't necessarily mean bad. If it works as a humidor, it works. I built my own humidor in my garage and aside from a few $ for material, it was free.

The Daniel Marshall humidors are pretty much like every humidor you'll see in any cigar shop, meaning they are overpriced for what you get, IMO. Marshall seems to make desktop humidors rather than cabinets -- which are you in the market for? If you're going to keep collecting cigars, you may want to look at getting a cabinet of some kind, as desktop humidors are far too small.

The Marshalls are your basic Spanish Cedar boxes with exotic wood veneers, recessed hinges and sometimes a standard brass lock. I've seen worse than these, and they will do you fine. I wouldn't pay $400 for a glorified shoe box that I could build myself, but that's just me.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I was looking to keep it small, between 50-100 cigars maybe upwards of 125 for right now. I might upgrade to a cab. in a few years. I am interested in your idea of building one that works well. From my experience most of the homemade ones I have seen aren't very efficent but if you could provide a link on a design it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

haha, I had to chuckle when I saw that the squeeze went back to his old nick. I agree that while you can be "had" still by trying to cheap out on a humidor, the other end of the spectrum is just a waste of time. Even a medium priced 150-200ct. box will do what you need to do very well, although I notice that plume development can be hampered, even though your cigars are in great condition. If you get a nice little "whoosh" when the lid closes, you are doing alright. After hearing a few horror stories in this forum, I would also suggest it come with a lock. Look at Premiumhumidors dot com and know that I have a few of "the guardians" but also that when I ordered three from him, I only got two and I never heard from him again, despite repeated attempts. What I got worked fine, though and was cheap. I am more pointing you to the type of humidor that works pretty well but is by no means expensive. Not the best, but they keep humidity fine.

Definately get a cedarwood box. This is probably a no brainer but I have recently noticed that many more humidors and coming with a rosewood interior. They are usually cheaper, and much larger than competing cedarwood boxes, but dont fall for it. The aging process and preservation of flavor will be largely hampered by a rosewood box.

And with cedarwood, dont go for a French made box. They are largely overpriced. Go for Spanish or Italian.

I got a great little 75 ct. humi from Overstock dot com for under $50. Looks good and hold the humidity great. Actually, it's the most worry free one I have. I should move my CC's to it.

Cuban Crafters make some nice looking ones that are well constructed for a good price.

Anything more than functional is furniture.

Peace.

I haven't priced a humidor in years, but I know a Daniel Marshalls is going to be expensive. I would consider a cabinet from Mr. Staebell.

A humidor is a box to store cigars in. Tight lid, cedar, and 50% larger than what you think you need are what you should be thinking of. Spend money on humidifier and hydrogemeter, not inlay and "handmade" in France pedigree, unless you're into furniture.

The risk of kicking butt is you get some crap on your shoe

Premiumhumidors Guardian looks about like the Tampahumidor dot com Milano which I own. Nice, gives that whoosh when you close it, inexpensive, and relatively stable at 67%. (I am using 5 drymistat tubes for humidification and the box is half full, which is soon to change Big Grin) Good Luck!

Yep, bobsled, that's the same cheap-a$$ old box.
But of course, it does exactly what I need it to do. All of my CC's are in icechests anyway, except for the ones with so few cigars left as to be a waste of space in the chest. So I guess you could call it a singles humidor. I have two of them and they are sturdy, whooshy and stable. I think they are what, $45-60 ea?

Your results may vary

I personally feel that if one is paying a high price tag for Cuban Cigars, I would think one would want to purchase a NICE humidor to store them in.

I have had very good luck w/ the Dimond Crown Humidor and the Dimond Crown Humidor system. It stores about 75+ Cigars of all shapes and sizes.

I have another Humidor (around $100.00) for my Non-Cuban smokes. Make sure which ever way you go, that the interior of said Humi is ALL Cedar.
