Im going for my 40th Birthday to Maui and staying at the Ritz Carlton, but I was just informed that the Hotel is a Smoke-free property.
What the F is that, does that mean that I can's smoke my Habanos anywhere, not even at the Bar, has anyone stayed here and can confirm, I called the reception and they said that they could not confirm this to call latter and ask for the manager, but now im seriously thinking of canceling and changing Hotels.
Any help would be appreciated, I would hate to pass my 40th Birthday without an Habano.
Kapalua, right? Go up the hill to the Plantation Course and you can smoke all you want. But watch the grain of the grass - it WILL influence the speed and direction of your putts in a big way. Be prepared for some weather, though...up there it can be rainy and cold when it's perfect at the hotel.
Kaanapali can be missed. If you want a really nice beach, take a trip over to the Wailea/Makena area - Big Beach is one of the finest, and doesn't get the wind you get in Kapalua and Kaanapali.
First order of business - reservations at Mama's Fish House on the road to Hana. I'm sure the concierge can hook you up.
As for smoking...it's a sad truth. You may be able to get away with it outside, but inside no way. And with the many Californicators vacationing there, don't expect any sympathy, no matter the quality of your cigar!

All Ritz Carlton properties in the US are smoke free, in accordance with Marriot policy. Marriot has owned Ritz Carlton for some time. Odds are you'll find a couple of smoker friendly patios close to the lounges and pools. Thats my experience with the Naples Golf Resort, Reynolds Plantation and Orlando locations.
Hawaii has a statewide law prohibiting smoking on bar/restaurant patios as well as hotel room balconies, so your outdoor smoking options will be limited.
You can probably carry your drink off somewhere out of the way and smoke. Some hotels do provide a covered, open-air seating area to smoke -- but there would not be drink service there.
I say f\/(k Hawaii then go some where where you are welcome. It is a sad truth us Californicators have screwed up many a cigar friendly area. I was in Cabo recently and had some broad from Santa Babara ask me to put one out in an outside palapa bar. I did not put it out and was quite rude to the old bag.

last year, when we were there, I was told the whole state was non-smoking within XXX ft of ALL buildings. I was having a cigar outside by the pool and a steward told me about this. He did actually setup a nice lounge chaize on the beach for me, and I just relocated to better digs.
so , Hawaii is very any smoking, pretty much the beach is it.
I was at the Sheraton Black Rock (Maui - Lahaina side) for a wedding last Sept and was told I could only smoke my cigar on the beach. Apparently the hotels do not own the beaches, they are public.
I've stayed at the Grand Wailaia Resort in the southern part of maui and the resort is unreal and they have at least a half a dozen little cubanas made for smokers. They are spread out through the garden and are really nice places to enjoy a nice cigar. The hotel is as good as it gets and Wailaia is in my opinion the nicest part of maui. It is really nice and hot and you don't get those winds that are in the northwestern part of the Island. I suggest to do the road to Hana. It is a beautiful drive and if you rent a convertable, it is nice to just go for the drive and have a smoke. The round trip is about 5 hours. That is if they didn't open the road that goes through to Wailaia. The road had been shut down due to an earthquake. I heard rumer that they reopen it. If not you have to drive there and then back the same way. As for food , I did not find maui the best island for that. Try the tommy bahamas in the mall in Wailaia or there are a few good reataurants in the four seasons next to the grand Wailaia.

They're actually called "cabanas" and they're for privacy whatever the reason, not just smoking. And please - with no offense intended for our Canadian friends - what's with this strip-mall mentality and penchant for mediocrity? Mall food on vacation in Maui? There are "Tommy Bahama" restaurants in any mall. Down in Wailea (Makena, actually), when you come out of the parking area for Big Beach, there's this little trailer that they serve food out of, and a guy sitting next to it slicing up fresh pineapples. Now THAT is some fine dining.
The 4-Seasons down that way has some great places to eat: famous Spago, and then this Italian place called Ferraro's. Both excellent. But - since you're in Kapalua, try the Plantation House. Longhi's in nearby Lahaina is also always good. But for smoking, you're not going to get much sympathy unless you take a walk and find a secluded area (which sounds like a really good idea, actually)

Can't even smoke on the beach in California, which is horrible. But that new law in New York banning parks is even crazier, if you ask me. I imagine it's in part motivated by cleaning up after cigarette butts.

That's where I went during my last visit to Maui.
Any idea how they hope to enforce the balconies part of that?
Yeah...a $350 charge if they catch you, and with the Californians there, any whiff of anything and they'll call security on you!

Supposedly they fine you. I'm sure if you get back to your room real late from dinner and want to enjoy a nice drink and habano on the balcony you should be ok. That all depends on the people around you.

Amidst the self-absorbed, has anyone ever heard of common courtesy? Sure, it's a free country and people should be able to do whatever they want, smoke or not, but at some point, there must be a balance of interests, and I would agree that the right of someone to be able to go where they please and be able to breath air unpolluted by cigarette or cigar smoke is to be recognized as superior to the right to smoke and pollute the air. In one instance, the act of simply being is passive...you don't do anything. For smokers, we are actively doing something that affects the environment of others. So it IS up to us to figure out a way to enjoy our pleasures without affecting the rights of others. WE are the ones who need to make the accommodations. Others should not have to accommodate us for the disruption of smoking. Deal with it! Nobody is saying that you CANNOT smoke; rather, there are limitations on where you CAN smoke so that you don't interfere with the rights of others. Not such a bad thing. And I say TAX THE HECK out of tobacco to help offset the costs of health care that the public institutions must shoulder. Foist the cost upon those whose health is or would be affected. Want to smoke? Go right ahead!! But be prepared to pay for the consequences to your own health.
Only seems fair.

I think that Roberto is just trying to find out where he could go and that they accept smoking. I don't think he was wanting a political opinion. Being said though, I do agree with not bothering people around you with your smoke. I do think that it is everyones right to not inhale others smoke. In Vancouver, where I live, they now passed a law that you cannot smoke with children in your vehicle. I fully agree with that. You can't smoke in bars and restaurants but I find it, for lack of better words, stuipid that you can't smoke in a cigar shop. If you don't want to inhale others polluted air then I don't think you should be in a cigar shop. Basically the only place you are allowed to smoke is on your private property and six meters away from any doorway or entrance to buildings. The problem I find with that is that instead of smokers smoking in a cigar shop where all that are in there are smokers, they sit on a sidewalk six meters away from the door and polute public air. Makes no sense to me. I prefer to smoke in my backyard where I bother nobody and have a nice selection of beverages. As for a hotel in Maui I still suggest The Grand Wailea where there are over 40 acers of land and there are designated smoking areas that are beautiful and are far from non-smokers. Sorry I mispelled cabanas in my last quote and by the way they are for smoking purposes. I stay there alot and have never seen anybody in them except for smokers. And the big ashtrays in them tell me that they are for smoking. Not to mention, the staff tell me that's what they are for. So you call it what you want. For privacy there are alot of spots on the property. I suggested Tommy Bahamas for lunch not because I thought it was fine dining. I suggested both Spagos and Ferraros in the four seasons for fine dining. I recomend the lobster risotto which has actully been taken of the menu but if you call the night before they should be able to put it together for you. It's fabulous! Hope you enjoy your 40th birthday Roberto. Maui is a great place to Vacation.

Oh - and don't forget Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Not only is it the state fish of Hawaii, it's a seafood restaurant at the Grand Wailea.
Going back to Kapalua - there are going to be some great places at the Ritz, no doubt. The grounds can't be beat, and there's nothing like a long, strolling walk with an old Monte 2. Maybe a Partagas SD2. Well, you have a great humidor from which to choose - don't let the hotel's smoking laws deter you from enjoying your cigar cruising around outside where nobody should really care.
