Looking at making a good purchase of Montes and was wanting some advice on what year to be looking for. Looking at purchasing something within the last decade or so. Would love to buy something older but that will probably be hard to get my hands on. I'll be looking getting some Edmundos & Petit Edmundos definetely. Maybe a box of #2s. I find that the 2008s are really good but still too young. Thanks in advance!

Montecristo is the most produced Cuban cigar, so you'll have quality vatiations in any year. Overall 06-08 has been good, but after smoking two boxes of excellent 06 MC#2s, a couple from a box of 10 have been totally bland.

I have been smoking Montecristo No. 2s from 2007 this summer and they are the best crop I've had in many years. Heavy in the right places, light in the right places, savory, sweet and floral notes coming in at the right time. Great structure and still rich. I could smoke them all day long.

I have a four boxes from 06, and here are my thoughts:

1) Monti #2: OK, not amazing
2) Monti Edmundo: Amazing, needed a year though
3) Monti Petit Edmundo: Great
4) Monti #1: Good, but not great

Cor: Steve, you have proven yourself to be a tremendous whack job.

The best Monte #2's I ever had were from 02. That being said I rarely smoke this cigar because it has been hard for me to find a good one.

I'm going to echo the board here. 06/07 was a great year for PE and MC2 in my opinion (full rich body). I was not impressed with 08 as the boxes I went through lacked that flavor from 06-early 07, but nonetheless still ok smokes. I have an unopened 09 box of PE marinating for the past couple of weeks which I will bust out this weekend on a fishing trip with buds =).

Good to know that the 1982 Monti's are good to smoke right from the box.

I personally prefer the 79'

Edmundos and PEs came out circa '04 and '06 respectively, so you're limited on the age of the boxes available.

While they aren't proven yet over the long haul, the vast majority of '06 cigars I've smoked across the marcas (I don't smoke many Montes) have been very good quality.

I completely agree. The 08 no 2 has been generally too light and lacking it's traditional richness. Still has the signature underlying tones, but not a well rounded smoke. Rather one dimensional. I've had great luck, however with the PEs and no 4s. 4s are ready out of the box, PEs need to rest 6 months to a year, but if need be are good out of the box.

i completly agree with you on 08 Monte 2's i have a further 3 boxes of these.i had a few 07's which were gorgeous.only 1 left though.the ones i used to get in late 80's early 90's seemed much more tasteful, however in may just be my memory playing tricks or my palate changing.i like Bolivars now a lot more than i used to so maybe the latter.

Never been lucky enough to have a 75 MC#2, but I have smoked a couple 75 MC#3s. Truly amazing smokes. You really can't compare them to recent cigars & not just because of the age. totally different strains of tobacco are used.
