Greetings everyone. I have heard from 2 separate non-cuban cigar makers that Cuba has imported Nicaraguan tobacco in the past to make up for shortages in the Cuban crop. I have never seen this reported on in any publication, and did not believe the information when I heard it. Since the 2 sources I have heard this story from are not related, I began to wonder if there is any truth to this? Could this just be a rumor that is making the rounds among the cigar community?
If true, it would cast doubt on any cigar coming out of Cuba and the claim of being a pure Habanos product. I can see why Habanos S.A. would not want this type of information to be publicly available.
Total bull****. And I suspect that you yourself have something to gain by even asking the question. Nice first post.
Perhaps your handle should have been Seeking_to_start_trouble.

It has been a long time (years) since I posted here, this question was enough to get me to respond. Your two sources are either very gullible or you are. Follow this board for a few days and you will realise that everybody who posts here (or just observes) thinks that, with few if any exceptions, an ordinary Cuban is better that a great cigar from anywhere else.Like any agricultural product tobacco crops vary in quality and amount. They have been dealing with this for centuries. Over the years the quality of the cigars has also varied. If they didn't buy Nic tobacco at the height of the boom, why now
Let me first say thank you for all the replies. Secondly, I have nothing to gain from making this post except knowledge -- it's my first post here because I never before registered at the CA forums. I wanted to ask the question here to get the widest possible audience of potential answers since I know CA has a large subscription base. I already said I was skeptical about the claim but since it came from two different NC makers it gave me pause.

Ha, if I ever have a Cuban cigar that burns and draws poorly, I will suspect that Cuba has been buying wrapper from Perdomo.

Haha, that's funny you should say that. I got a box of RyJ Robustos from a semi-shady dork-a$$ vendor in Spain onceyears ago, the third and last box I got from them. They looked like they had been taken from a box of Perdomo "The Cigar" Robustos, rebanded and boxed in the EL box and shipped to me. They burned JUST like that Perdomo turd as well. I'll take ANY of JR's Villa Clara products over anything from Perdomo at any price point.

Cuban cigars with anything other than Cuban tobacoo simply cannot and will not happen. It is a matter of economics. Any tobacoo brought into the country is subject to import/duty just like anywhere else, which boils down to Cuban paying more for a product than they are selling for- It will just never happen. I'm sure there are some fakes floating out of Cuba with tobacoo from all over the place.
