One smuve voice. He was the king of the modern salsa movement called "Timba" in the early/mid-1990's, but with the advent of groups like Charanga Habanera, Bamboleo, Paulito F.G., and several others, and then the move to reggaeton, the popularity of his music has waned, as has that of Adalberto Alvarez and Los Van Van, which are other popular artists of the genre. Van Van started in the late-1960's and remains popular. Adalberto has been a great performer, director and arranger for years, very lyrical and complex melodies and rhythms, and he remains popular, albeit to a lesser extent than as few as 4 or 5 years ago...great, full, rich music...worthwhile picking up some of his CD's that are available (look for, "El Sueño Cubano" and "Jugando con Candela" and "Para Bailar Casino").
Issac has great musical pedigree, and when he went out on his own, had at his side the fantastically talented Girardo Piloto. Piloto was part of the first exploration into the new generation of salsa called "timba" and was a founding member of N.G. La Banda (New Generation Band). Issac Delgado was its headliner. Piloto also wrote for Charanga Habanera, and went with Issac when he went out on his own. Piloto penned some of Issac's most famous charts, including the popular, "No Me Mires a los Ojos"
Piloto has gone out on his own and started the band, "Klimax" in the mid/late-1990's. Issac still plays his works, though.
Lately, Issac's popularity sort of hit the skids. Whereas there used to be lines to get into El Palacio de la Salsa where he would perform (at the Hotel Riviera in Havana), he could hardly draw a crowd as late as a year ago when playing at the Habana Cafe in the Melia Cohiba Hotel. He's still a GREAT performer however...it's just that the tastes of listeners have changed dramatically. Worthwhile to catch one of his shows...definitely!
