Yes, it has been done! Years ago when family was in the tobacco growing business I rolled some cigars with Virginia leaf - - forgetable.
As for Cuban seed fugedaboudit, you will never see any. In Cuba, seeds are gaurded like Fort Knox, as soon as the plants go to flower they are topped to provide more nutrients to the leaves.
There are farms in Cuba that are dedicated to growing seed plants and developing hybreds, again you can't get near those places.

You could try this guy.

Not a bad website, he gives detailed instructions and cheap seed. He says he has cuban seed but who knows..

Edit. I just realised there is possible "source posting" here. Although he says he has "Havana seed", I would be almost certain this is from plants grown in the UK.

Growing your own tobacco and rolling your own cigars? That's a long process man! I'll check back on this thread in 5-7 years.

Good luck with that. That's a fun site and he seems like a helpful guy.
I have seen an article about someone in the US who grew his own cigar tobacco, had a professional roller make cigars for him. I believe he sent one of the boxes to Marvin Shanken. If I find it I'll post a link, there was a lot of info in it.

Sounds it. I am throughly looking forward to it. I may try and try to get some plants... from North Carilina due to the serious time it takes to start from seeds. Ill keep you updated. If you find the link i would love to see it.

I'm afraid that you will need a Havana type leaf for cigars. The tobacco from North Carolina is either Burley or Virginia Bright Leaf grown for pipe tobacco or cigarettes.

I forgot about Binder's thread.
Here's the article by Douglas Doan, the guy who grew and made the Virginia Blues
