I just received a box of MC #2. The date stamp is May 04. The color is much lighter than what I am used to and they are not as oily. Does anyone have any experience to share?
Great cigar. Shade of wrapper immaterial and a matter of personal preference. Anything else...YOU tell US. Much more beneficial to get a review from the smoker of the cigars than from someone else who smoked different ones. The latter case does nobody any good. Your review of the cigars you have does do us good. Post a heading. "REVIEW of MONTECRISTO #2, MAY 04"
That way, someone who gets a box can search for such a review and take it for what it's worth. But there's really no answer or any sense to someone else's experience relative to yours.

I need to broaden my experience and start ordering some Monte's. It's one of the brand names I haven't made a box purchase of. The only Monte I've had was a #1 brought back to me last summer from Qutar. I've heard nothing but the best about Monte 2's, though. Enjoy!
RyJ, you get all the opportunity you could ever want to make that point, and it is a great one. I get a kick out of how often you are able to bring the argument to bear. One of the best points worth making today, especially on a forum that is so full of people on an exploratory journey. On to my point, got two boxes a few months ago, one from Feb 04 and one from April 04. One was as dark as a lighter EL, one was much lighter and not very oily. Now I am of course saving the darker box as whole, although there is no real reason why other than they "look better" and it is a personal decision. But I have tapped into the lighter box and they are absolutely wonderful right out of the box. When the torcedore reaches into his stack of cased wrapper leaves, he puts one on the next bunch he gathers together or pulls from a mold. He doesn't think about making the dark cigars better. Of course, you know this to be true, and while I have already admitted to wanting to hoard the darker box and smoke the lighter, I can assure you that there is no reason to think less of a lighter shade box...that's discrimination, man. Some say these cigars are not as good as they once were 10, 20 years ago, and I do not have the depth of experience to say anything more than the ones I have are probably my most satisfying cigars right now, and I have quite a few. Such richness wrapped around a lightly floral twang and very nice on the finish. Right out of the box...how many cigars can boast that?

Like you lebexec I have 04 No2s. They are lighter than I would have expected. In fact rather dry looking. Having read previous posts on this subject (thank you vets)I knew not to give this to much importance. What I do know is that they are sublime. The draw, up to now, has been perfect in every case. I had minor burn problems with the first one but that was due to impatience (imaturity) on my part. I can only sujest that you wait for as long as you can. I still lack the experience, and english, to wax lyrical re the subtle ins and outs of the flavours. AS a foot note I have just recived my first SLB of Cohiba siglo VI.Trying to keep my hands out of that particular tray is testing my British 'stiff upper lip' to the hilt. Enjoy your No2s, one of the very best.
I find non-Cubans like German opera, to long and too loud. (Waugh)

Thanks for the response. I have been smoking MC#2's for many years and came to expect a certain look and feel. The box is from a new source and when I saw the color and less oily feel, naturally I was a little concerned. They are resting comfortably and I will probably wait several months before I smoke the first one.
