He has been out of the country since early summer and has been holding off until the hurrican season subsided. Anyhow, he is off and running again next week.
I would like to know, from anyone that has been on the island since the price hike, what is smoking well or looking like it will smoke well.
I am putting in an order for some HDM -petit robustos and some Part -shorts. Are the shorts still available in a 50 box?
Also would like to try some of the new Limitadas, any preferences and what are the prices like.
RyJ you seem to always have the inside scoop....what about your recommendations?
I would like to pick up at least one box of DC for my June/05 wedding guests. And maybe a box or two of figurados...possibly some HuP #2's....
Any help and input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers to all and a great Thanksgiving to all of you that are celebrating it early here in Canada.... Go Riders Go!
FWIW: Unless you're susceptible to sticker shock, Cohiba are great these days, especially with the introduction of the subliminado EL, and the siglo VI. Both are excellent. They also recently released a Petit Robusto under the Hoyo de Monterrey label. The EL's haven't been in widespread circulation in Cuba, however. If you can get your hands on some, the Partagas Serie D No. 1 is going to be a wonderful cigar.
For those mere mortals on a reasonable budget, there are some great cigars lying around. A few months ago, they had some of the most incredible looking Ramon Allones Gigantes I had seen in a long time at the factory store at Romeo y Julieta - I would imagine they still have them. So if you're looking for a DC, that would be a pick for me. They'll be right around $200 - $225 or so for the box...so that should fill that gaping hole!! The RyJ store also had a decent stock of Upmann #2 - maybe $175 a box.
You might also want to consider having your connection pick up some smaller boxes...for example, the Partagas 8-9-8 and the Cohiba Siglo VI BOTH come in 10 packs...I think there's also a 10-pack of Monte 2.
Good luck!

RELOBA cigars are great. However, you will not find them in LCDH. They are a peso cigar sold to locals. I bought 2 bundles and while they are mild and pretty linear, they are consistent and blow the pants off smokes costing a whole lot more aimed at gringos. Try em - it wont rip a hole in your wallet and you may be pleasantly surprised. You may encounter some resistance to this recommendation on this board but its part of the experience. Enjoy.
Why you would ever smoke peso cigars in cuba is beyond $$$$ belief. It would be akin to drinking balsamic vinegar whilst in Tuscany! Oh my! Go to a LCDH and try some of the custom rolled, they are cheaper than the brand cigars and many say much better. But if you have no cash, and only if you have no cash, then peso cigars it is.
My sentiments exactly (although I wouldn't say 'whilst' ). And it wouldn't be balsamic vinegar...too much like the wine (relatively speaking) - more like rice vinegar.
Those things are absolutely putrid and one is quite enough to make that determination.

Peso cigars made with god knows what. If you want to help the locals, buy the cigars and then toss them. At least you know you helped them out a little while dodging the bullet yourself.
But then you still fail to address the question..Teh question is LCDH or Peso cigars. Have you traveld outside of Havana or have you gone toward the Malecon? If you have ever seen the squalid living conditons and the "Government Housing" (For those that have not been there..swquatters rights in building that have been rotting for 20 years...) You would know not to get peso cigars from locals with the exception of helping a fellow human get a littel American dollars to then worry to exchange them to pesos to try and wait in line to get rum or meat. For those that go to Havana, get outside of the tourist area and see the real Cuba and the plight of the "Citizens".
Mr. Poupon, peso cigars are an unreliable source of the worst kind. You think there is a factory producing those? You say you have the cigar smarts to avoid unreliable sources but you then have the ignorance to recomment peso cigars over a reliable source. Your post was just plain poor advice, poor. You then compounded it with your unreliable source comment. Learn from Segundos post, read it, believe it.

Yes, there are factories producing peso cigars. I've been to one near Cienfuegos. Most of them are crap, but I've had a couple good ones. Fun to try when in Cuba, but not what I would bring home.
There's some funny stuff on this thread. RyJ the MC#2's come in a 15 pack, 5-3packs, pretty cool pkg actually. I've also heard the Trini Reyes come in some smaller pkg as well, I think a 12 pack? I like the idea of the new pkgs as it affords a chance to get a wider mix w/o committing to an entire box.
