Im also a person not to keen on the monte#2 ive always prefered the diplo#2 or the partagas serie p#2. But then again its all down to personal taste as to what you prefer.
Exactly Fedor, smoke what you like. Just because they are CCs doesn't mean they all have the same flavor profile. IMO Diplomaticos No.2 has a different flavor profile than the Montecristo No.2 I like both but I prefer the flavor profile of Montecristo No.2. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the Diplomaticos. It is still a great smoke that I wouldn't mind smoking at all.

Very young MC2's can taste grassy. Since this is such an in-demand smoke, they don't sit around very long. It's hard to find them with more than about a year of age unless you're dealing with an expensive boutique vendor. To my palate, the '06's are still far too young. I have a box of 01's that are just getting there now.
Note: that much age is not required for every brand. PSP2's, for example, are excellent more or less right off the truck. MC2's take patience.
Also, since they're one of the most popular smokes in the world, they're widely counterfeited. I think I've seen almost as many fugazzi MC2's as Cohibas.

I was with some of the others in this thread believing the Monte #2 is overrated. However, after last night's smoke, I've switched sides.
The Montecristo No. 2 from last night raised the bar right off the bat with a nice prelight draw and aroma. It got better after the light as the flavors jumped out of the gate while the burn was as good as one can hope for, not letting some nicks and cuts on the wrapper affect its progress. I enjoyed the toasted tobacco taste with a citrus-like undertone for about... I don't know, it was so good I completely lost track of time! This was one of the few cigars recently that I smoked to the nub.
I've always been a fan of the Diplomaticos No. 2, so it'll be interesting to revisit it after this great smoke to see how they compare.
This has been fascinating. I have picked up a few 3 packs of MC#2's in Duty Free shops and found them nice, but as already said, was not blown away. I certainly did not find them worth the roughly $17 a piece I was paying. Uneven burn, tough draw on a couple and nothing special taste wise. Think I will also bury them in the Humi and come back to them in a long while.

I smoked the Diplomaticos No. 2 last night as I promised. It did not smoke as well like the Monte No. 2. Keep in mind that this Diplo had a rough wrapper that seems to have been victim of being kept too wet. The cigar is also slightly under-packed. Other than the appearance, it burned and drew great, but the flavor is less complex and rougher around the edges compared to the more refined Monte.
The Montecristo No. 2 wins this round.... for now.
I just had my very first Monte No. 2 last night. Everyone knows the hype surrounding this cigar and I'll admit, it did not live up. I wasn't really expecting it to however. This cigar was taken from a January 08 box that just came in 3 days ago. Construction was beautiful...dark chocolate wrapper and so oily a small sheen is visible. Full bodied flavor with lots of woody smoke, great draw despite supposed draw problems. The main thing I take away from this cigar is it's aging potential, and it has lots of it...
I had my first Monty #2 last week, approx 2 weeks from the time they arrived. (yea I know all those guys who told me I would not wait a month were spot on) Anyway, I thought it was a very good smoke but I also thought, hmm, did not give me a woody or anything. Next morning I had one of my goto's a Natural Root, and it seems like less of a smoke than normal. I am not seasoned enough to talk of spice, or leather, or chocolate, it just seemed like less of a smoke. So as soon as I receive my box of #2's I will lite another of the singles and see where that goes. for ~10 bucks the #2 is a deal.
I completely agree. I didn't even like the Dip #2 very much for the exact same reasons you gave. The Monte 2 is such a smooth, rich, creamy cigar. Fabulous.
