He had an interesting life. Coincidentally, later today I'll be meeting a roller from El Laguito, Berta Corzo. She has worked there for over 25 years so she probably would have known him. I must mention this to her.

The past few years have witnessed the passing of some of the stars and giants of the Cuban cigar industry. Let's hope that their reverence for and dedication to the industry is not lost. They were all 'old school'. Those in the factories today don't seem to have the pride in the workmanship and interest in preserving high standards and are, instead, simply content to put in their time and be able to sneak out a few cigars and materials here and there to make money rolling on the side selling counterfeits to unsuspecting tourists. We can only hope that such complacency that characterizes just about any other work situation for Cubans won't overwhelm this industry.

"I learned many things about tobacco from my grandfather," he said puffing away on his Lanceros and watching the gray smoke rise to the ceiling as he was deep in thought. "Tobacco is part of Cuban culture, and Cohiba is the best cigar made in Cuba."
RIP and thank you for your work. Would have been fun to meet you.
Sorry to lose one of the all time "legends" of Cuban cigar making. I just hope that Graycliff has the recipes for their cigars and that the owner of Graycliff Cigars/Resort, Enrico Garzaroli is able to carry on as well now with quality as when Senor Lara was doing the job. The Crystal, Professionale and the Espresso all are some of my favorite NC blends/cigars.

Judging from the rave reviews for these cigars, I would guess he did a great job. Too bad he had to leave Cuba but then, everyone who had a similar chance would have done the same.
