I love cigars, as many of you here do. So when I get a chance to strike a conversation with someone it will inevitably lead to cigars and of the great philosophical attributes these represent! However, the greatest insult is when you pop the question…so, do you enjoy cigars?; followed by the shallowest of responses….I only smoke Cubans, Cohiba’s….If I had a nickel for each time I heard this moronic response I would be quite wealthy right now.
Typically people that “go there” wouldn’t know a true Cohiba from a Dominican Cohiba and need I say perhaps a HavaTampa. I love Cuban cigars as much as everyone here on this forum, but cigars are so much more than just purchasing a stick because you have been led by its iconic status or almost supernatural reputation. There are amazing cigars coming out of Nicaragua and Honduras and most certainly the Dominican. I tend to get my hands on very rare Puerto Rican cigars which are just scrumptious -but that’s a discussion for another time. The point I want to make is that for every person and moment there is a flavor, and although I respect those who stick to a particular smoke or country of choice, don’t belittle a person’s intelligence with the ignorance of associating good with the expensive or seemingly forbidden.
Thanks for allowing me to vent!

Everybody's taste is different. Just because I really like a certain cigar doesn't mean everyone else will. That being said, in general I prefer Cuban cigars, but only certain brands. Other Cuban brands I would never buy. I also like certain NC brand, though not many. Problem is, the NC brands I like cost MUCH more than the Cuban brands, so I rarely buy them.

Cigar Teacher,

Will straighten this guy out please, as I am too busy writing a consulting report and smoking a delicious cigar from Antarctica.

It's been a long time since I smoked a NC cigar because in California cigars are very expensive. I've only had one NC cigar that I would have thought was cuban, a Partagas 150 and I think they were about $25. I smoke almost every brand of CC's and love them all but my favorite are the brands with fruit and spice profiles. I like the flavor of NC but not the mouth feel, they always seem to get hot and bitter towards the end. So for the $$ I'll stay with Havana.

I like all brands of all nations....Do i have favorites? Absolutely both cuban and non...I went thru 15 years of just cubans, but thankfully that changed.

I dont prefer one over the other, rather my mood dictates which one i'll smoke at any givin time.

I think are your replies are great, however I think the gist of my post was lost. I am referring to the annoyance of people who immediatley want to associate their personal cigar knowldege - particularly Cuban- to their superficial association with Cohiba. Its like this acquaintance who came over my home once and after I served him a Johnnie Walker Gold Label on the rocks proceeded to mix it with orange juice. I almost kicked him out, but proceeded to inform him that next time I would serve him something out of a plastic jug which would perhaps mix better with oj!

In California you don't see people smoking cigars we're all hiding in our smoking caves so we won't be caught. But anyone who says they only smoke Cohibas is no cigar lover. It's probably the only brand they've ever heard of.

I have a friend at work that I offered a Padron 64 to because I saw him smoking on my friends boat. He looked at me and said, "I only smoke Cubans, I get them from Sammy". Sammy is my friends brother in law that buys his "Cohiba Esplendidos" from a friend in Canada for $1.00 a stick. Enough said.
Yes Boriken I know what you are talking about.
I also had some Puerto Rican Puros that a friend brought back while visiting relatives and they were very good. Very unique I may add.

I have a co-worker and good friend who I thought new alot about cigars... Until I joined this forum and really started to learn about them. Hes a great guy and all, but he calls a good cigar a "Romeo and Juliet" and I know its not Cuban. In fact, when I asked to go in on a box-split of my first order of cubans, he said "sure, order some maduros." WTF? The only maduros outta cuba are the cohiba maduros, and they are way out of both our price range. I also showed him some sources (legit and fake), and he was clueless as to all the little intricacies of buying CCs. He told me it wasnt possible and I "loled". Anyway, the moral of the story is he thinks he knows good cigars, and yeah, if they work for him thats great, but hes missing out on so much because he doesnt do the research and take the time to learn. Its not CC Cohibas, but he does brag about those "Romeo and Juliets" Wink

I tried to tell a friend of mine who bought a few "Cuban" RyJs in a mall in Mexico that they were probably (I was being polite, they were definitely) fake. I think he only paid $5 or $6 each. I didn't even get into the vitola, so I have no idea - doubt he would either.

I argued with him that Mexico is full of fakes and it simply is not possible that he got real product for that price, etc. His argument was they aren't illegal in Mexico so why should they be more expensive. I countered that they are more than that in Cuba, why would they be cheaper in Mexico. And so it went, on and on.

As the debate got more heated, I decided to just let him win this one. He was so sure, and who am I to dash his hopes and dreams.

So after conceding defeat, he then says to me, "I don't get what the big deal is. They taste the same as the Dominicans."
