I only started smoking cigars this summer so I am definitely a neophyte. I have no experience with CC's. So I am trying to do some homework before I make a purchase. How do Dominican Monte #2's compare to Cuban Monte #2's? What else might you suggest as CC's for beginners? Price is a consideration, for example I don't think Siglo VI's will be in the humi soon. Thanks, Krazee

First time I lit one, I actually thought the Diplo#2 tasted a helluva lot like a young Monte#2 on the first few puffs. Then it developed it's own flavors that are somewhat similar but definitely different from the Montes. Not saying it's better, but it's different.

It's like comparing Peter Luger's to Tad's Steaks. Big difference. For CCs that cost less than Montecristos (I don't think Montes are expensive at all) I guess you can try Juan Lopez or Saint Luis Rey.. they're both very good. But if you've never smoked a Cuban before, splurge a little and pop your cherry right with a proper stick... even if it means you gotta purchase a single, at least it will be memorable.

There is nothing in common with Cuban Monte's and Dom. Monte's except the name. They are made with completely different tobacco, planted in different soil, produced using different techniques and made by different companies. Same with Cuban Cohibas and Dom. Cohibas, Cuban RyJ's vs. Dom RyJ's, etc. Non-Cuban cigars with Cuban names are just that.....NON-Cuban cigars with Cuban names. For the most part, the non-Cuban cigars that have "Cuban" brand names are crap and just use the Cuban name to sell their inferior product.

Personally, I don't like the taste profile of cc Montes, and do enjoy the nc.
There is a little similarity in taste, but not much. The last nc I smoked was constructed so poorly it was not enjoyable. Have not tried the new white label nc.
I guess I should provide a little more info. I like Nubs in a Connecticut wrapper. I also like CAO MX2's. I like Graycliff 1666. So maybe that might help you with your recommendations for my ventures. I guess I would be smart to sample a few and when I found one that I really liked I should make a box purchase (for economics and aging). Thanks for the info so far.

Dominican Monte's are WAY better than any current production CC on the market. They're more balanced, complex and refined than anything coming out of Cuba. The only CC that even comes close is the Cohiba Gran Reserva, but even that cigar still pales in comparison...
Anyone wanna buy some ocean front property in Arizona?

You're better off getting CC Montes. Smoke some, age like 5. I'd also like to mention that Monte CC's are only slightly more expensive than Dom Monte's, like $10 a box.

The above post is a direct result of smoking Cuban cigars that come in glass topped boxes.

Hey, I got a great deal on those from a guy who's uncle knows a lesbian who's lover works at the Partagas factory. I was told that the glass topped Cohibas are the rarest!

You can't get glass top Cohibas in Cuba, that product is primarily from the DR and Mexico.
The Cuban falsioso torcedors are far to smart to package them in that manner.

I must say the peacemaker had the best information although the small similarity may be that the Dominicans are using Cuban seeds. It is the soil, environment and production by the factory that will also influence the cigars. But they are 2 totally different cigars FYI and it really is what you like and Dominican do make good cigars and even Nicaraguan as well. But from my experience I am Cuban all the way for my taste. Several of my friends who I enjoy cigars with as well are Cuban all the way. So I cannot imagine so many people to be wrong who are also so very different in taste buds and personalities. But again hope this helps and really its what you like. But sample some without any biased to be objective for all cigars then just weed out what you dont like and go from there. Also try different drinks with different cigars and cigars will also differ in taste depending on when and where you smoke. Morning afternoon, late at night also depends what you eat or ate. Also drinking, coffee and water are 2 of my fav's with a cigar. Water just for the taste clearing and coffee for me will enhance a cigar especially monte 2. Scotch or a bourbon, wine, merlot or chile wine. There are so many different ways and you just have to start putting some real time and investigative work to be more knowing. Good start though. good luck
