Kind of a strange question I guess but, I'm curious to hear how everyone handles their cigar ash while smoking.

Do you wait for the ash to gain some length then "tap" the cigar and remove a large section of ash at once or do you "roll" the ash against the side of your ashtray and gradually remove it as you continue?

I find myself doing a bit of both and it typically depends on the format I'm smoking.

Just curious

I always let mine grow out and it always falls off on it's own when I set the cigar down. Sure, once or twice I've taken one in the lap, but everytime I've tried to roll off or otherwise manipulate the ash, it screws up the burn line or the flavor.

Edit: Eh, I just rolled off the ash on the cigar I'm smoking now and it's fine, I was being too "scientific" above. I say do as you wish! But anyway, I let mine fall off on their own.

I never "tap" the ash off! As soon as it gets about 3/4" I roll it off so it does not end up on my lap.

If the ash has proper density and is long filler, there will be a line of fire, so to speak. To get rid of the ash, I hold the cigar at about a 45 degree angle, and gently push a corner of the ash. The ash makes a clean break. No rolling, mashing, tapping...just press and the ash breaks off.

Whenever I feel that the ash is getting too long and might fall into my lap I like to purge (blow out slowly through the cigar). This has the combined benefit of clearing the cigar of any stale smoke, and making the ash very loose so it will tap of easily whatever its length.

I believe the proper terminology is to "tipple" your cigar. Do do this properly, once the ash has reached an appropriate length, you puff on the cigar and lightly tap the side of the cigar with your finger. The combination of puffing and tapping will cause the cigar ash to fall off at the line of fire. Best to determine the best ash length and tipple your cigar before you wear the ash.

ROFL, Jack!

Depending on my mood, I will do a combination of all the above.

PS- That includes the "ash-in-lap" part, hahaha
