That's the one weakness of Bethpage Black - not a good finishing hole. You shouldn't be able to hit 6-iron, 9-iron on the final hole of a major.

I think the idea was to make 18 a birdie hole to have a dramatic finish...Phil and Duval were hitting sand wedges into an elevated green to a tight front pin, and blasted it past. If it was dry, it could've been drivable for some. That would be exciting!
