Yes and no. It's no problem to come by yer lonesome but courses like to round out foursomes, so expect to be paired with someone else.
When I travel I will sometimes walk on alone. I also play frequently with 1 or 2, so the course will round out a foursome. People are usually cool and it usually works out fine. Sometimes get to play with really cool people. Never had a bad experience really.
One other thing, very busy or popular courses will have less openings for walk ons so call in advance!
If you want to play by youself, try to be the first one out. Some semi-private or resort courses will allow this. With a cart and half-decent game, you can finish in 3 hours. I do this alot on family trips where we are staying at a resort. Skip the prepaid bfast and warm-up, grab a muffin and coffee and tee off before 7 with a nice tip to the starter. Give myself a mulligan on first hole as a warm-up (breakfast ball). I am back with the family by 10. If I only play 9, I'm back for the nice breakfast with everyone.
The risk of kicking butt is you get some crap on your shoe
The courses I play have no problem with it as long as it is slow. On busy days you can expect to be paired up with someone.
I do not play really high dollar country clubs, mostly public, or military courses. I have a good military course and I can usually be the first or second one off in the morning, if it is really slow I will play two balls and still make it through 18 holes pretty quickly.
I generally like the comradery of other's while playing. Especially friends. However, since I started becoming more interested in cigars, I love toplay golf alone and enjoy my cigar.
On the private course, I like playing a round by myself once in a while. It's not always so easy on the public courses during the season.
If there is no one on my heels, I can get a lot of practice in. I can take second shots, not as mulligans but just as practice shots(I always accept the first shot....well most of the time, anyway. lol). And a caddy is usually enough company for me.
"Let's stop the hysterics about the freedom of Cubans – which is not our government's responsibility – and consider freedom of the American people, which is. The point being: it is Americans who live in a free country, and as free people we should choose whom to buy from or where to travel – not our government."
