I'm going to put this out in the open and hope someone reveals the mystery to me. What the hell is so great about golf? It totally disinterests me and I just can't find a reason to even try a round or two. Even miniature golf bores the piss out of me.
Also, even if I did decide to play golf, I wouldn't know how to go about it. Do you have to buy a membership or will country clubs/golf courses allow you to pay per game or something?

Golf interests people for many, many reasons. I enjoy the challege of playing consistent and working towards getting better every time I play. This is a VERY difficilt game and is not for everybody. In my opinion, a good golfer (or one that enjoys it for that matter) has an optomistic attitude and doesn't let themslef get flustered easily (like when you have a bad round or even hit a bad shot). It's nice to be outside and enjoy the weather and it's also a great way to get out, have a few laughs, enjoy the scenery and have a cigar while hanging out with some friends. As far as begining is concerned, start at a driving range and just work on hitting the ball with good contact. Believe me, for the beginner, this will prove easier said than done. Once you get the hang of that, you can try your hand at the real deal on a public course where you can pay for nine or eighteen holes. Give it a try. There's a reason why so many people LOVE this game and there's a spot for it on this website!!!
I have to agree with what cjl said about this great game. I also enjoy it because its a nice and quiet game which lets you concentrate better and also most of the time your surroundings are real beautiful and peaceful.

Golf is a game that is, in my mind, you against yourself. It is a hard game to learn and impossible to master. But your rewards are directly a result of your commitment.
There is nothing better than realizing that all the rounds duffing, all the buckets at the range, all the lessons - for one moment come together in a perfect harmony that is the well struck golf shot (I think I may have just channeled Kevin Costner here but o'well.)
It can be VERY rewarding to one's psyche, not to mention good friends, beautiful scenery, scotch, cigars, and pretty cart girls.
How can you go wrong?

You might as well ask "what is the attraction of people to: a) cigars, 2) wine, 3) tennis, 4) skiing, 5) hunting, 6) fishing, 7)fill in the blank with your own passionate hobby."
I play for a variety of reasons. At various times I find comradeship or solitude on a golf course, elation or frustration, a peaceful walk to birdies or a death march of double bogeys, time away from the family or time with them. All are real, all are good, and all are part of my life and the game of golf. If you've never tried it, maybe you should before you criticize it. Just don't expect to master it quickly, even if you're a gifted athelete. Patience is one of the virtues golf will teach you and reward you for having, or reveal to all around you that you lack it.
