Whatever you do, DONT just go out yourself and start swinging. That is the best way to pick up bad habits. Go to the range and hire an instructor for lessons. After each lesson, practice what you learned over and over again.
That should be your staring point. Watch the golf channel, buy some golf magazines and learn all you can.

I think the best way to get started is to find a local PGA Teaching Professional and get a few lessons from them. I believe this can be done through the PGA website. Most courses and large golf stores (Golf Galaxy) have PGA Teaching Pros that give lessons. They can be expensive, but beginning with the correct grip, swing plane, etc. is definitely worth the money. It'll certainly save you some time and aggravation on the course and range.

See a pro. I know a good one in Hayward. A bit of a drive, but worth it! One of his prize pupils is THE leading money winner on the LPGA tour right now...just murdering the field.

Don't try to learn on your own. First order of business is not even try to hit a ball...just focus on learning the basics of putting for the next 2 - 3 months. If you go short distance (putting) to long distance (driver), you'll be much better off... Drive for show...putt for dough. Short game is CRITICAL and the entire game should start from there.
