Hey guys, I am thinking about upgrading my clubs. I am offered a Callaway Big Bertha iron set (3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 irons+PW+SW+their carrying bag) graphite shafts for 2000 EGPs, that's around 370 US Dollars.
Is that a fair price for these Callaways? I don't know how old are they, but they belong to my instructor and he is the first owner. They are his personal clubs, not the ones he use in training new players. He's selling them because he wants to get a new Callaway X 20 set.
What do you think? And what would you recommend for me? Steel shafts or graphite shafts??
It's a full Top Flite set for just 300 USDs. A driver, two woods, two hybrids, 6,7,8,9 irons, PW, SW, a Putter and a bag. What do you think guys? I know Top Flite is made in the same factory the Callaways are made in, have anybody here tried them??
I have a friend going to the US this summer, he can bring them back with him.

Not a bad deal for the BB's...and they'll be great WHEN YOU START YOUR LESSONS! With the low price you're paying, think of all the money you'll free up for LESSONS! Pull the trigger on the Callaway's.

First of all, just to make sure you know, Top Flite is not that great of a brand as far as clubs. Yea they will work great and probably be all you need for a long time, but in head to head comparison, Callaway clubs are miles ahead. So from that stand point callway's are the best, you may never need them, but they are the better club. You kindof get the idea since you can get all that( driver, woods, hybrids, irond, putter and bag) for just 299. You probably will get what you pay for, meaning they will work fine, just they wont be the best quality or have great durability... but this is definitely a good set for you to progress on. Just for comparison, I won a driver in a tournament a year or so ago, a Ping driver which I returned for stor credit cause I already have a Titleist driver ( which I love!) and i got a store credit of 350$ which is what most drivers go for, if they are the new ones. All that to say, Golf is expensive, Callaways wont make you play better, you probably wont notice a huge difference as far as irons ( you would notice a difference between a callaway driver and a top flite driver) but once you progress and start controlling your shots and have better accuracy, you will start feeling a difference in irons. I personlly like the 2 year old taylor mades the best I hit those with the most accuracy and still play them.
Anyways, if you are looking for a intermediate set to last for a few years so you can figure out if you really want to continue with golf, go for the top flites. I started off with some dunlops way back in the day and I played them until I inhereited my dads old set in high school. Now I play taylor made irons, Titleist R7 driver, taylor made hybrids, odysee white hot putter, an old ben hogan L wedge as well as those worrior wedges I told you about, they are great clubs.

So are you suggesting that I buy the used Callaway irons or the Top Flite full set?? Notice that I have broken my woods, so I will need to buy other ones, so in this regard the Top Flite would be more practical.

Lucky I am going to throw my 2 cents in. I would assume if you are taking lessons from this guy he is a pretty good golfer and practices a lot. A lot of times people like that hit a lot of balls and will have a tendancy to literaly wear out thge groves grips etc. I would pay close attention to these parts of the irons on every club especially the short irons that they would tend to do the most practicing with and also where the grooves are very important to get the ball to stop on the green. Also I would assume if he is an accomplished golfer he probobly uses a stiffer shaft than would be needed by a more recreational golfer so I would hit a few buckets first and see if you can generate enough clubhead speed to get the ball up and hit it straight. If you are really looking for a game improvement club I would stick to a cavity back with the proper shaft for your swingspeed ( have it checked if you can) most clubmakers make larger cavity back clubs the callaway you are thinking of buing is one of them so if the grooves, shaft and all look good go for it, if not keep looking Good Luck
The Callaways are still over priced at $370 US for a used set in the U.S. Of course, availability may skew the price in your country.
Forget the Top Flights, they are junk; if they were cigars they would be called dog-rockets.
Best bet would be to purchase a used set of irons in the U.S. and take them back to you. Buy your woods seperately, one at a time if that helps with affordability. Most bigger golf shops in the U.S. will have a used rack and drivers 1 yr old can be had for $70-$100.
I prefer steel shaft unless you have a very slow swing speed. You look young, no need to pay a premium for graphite shafts.
Lucky, e-mail me, I'll send you a decent Taylor Made driver for free (unless shipping cost $100!)

Very nice TSF! Lucky, can you buy golfing supplies, like grips, gloves and stuff? If you buy a used set, get some new grips. They are usually overlooked when starting out but they are very important.

I tried the Big Bertha irons today, they are very good, a world of difference between the feel of these and the feel of my cheap Fox Bat irons. I think I will buy them, specially that their condition is very good. I will try to reduce the price a bit and he will take back my Fox Bat irons so it could end up a fair price. Also I won't have to buy a new driver since TSF thankfully sent me a good Taylor Made one. (Thanks again TSF)
I checked the prices of them and it's almost the same, and the ones on the web site do not include a SW too, so I think it could be a very fair deal.

Tom, the DHL website says the package has been delivered and received by the receptionist at the office. I have not heard from the guy yet but he's probably busy and will send me an email soon.
Thanks a billion Tom!
