I haven't used them but a friend of mine and me are going to get a free hybrid from Warrior Custom Golf Clubs. We still haven't settled on for a set of three wedges (PW, SW and LW) or a hybrid. We're waiting till my friend goes to the US this June so he could order them from there. Hybrids, as much as I know, are used as a replacement for the hard-to-hit 3 and 4 irons. They could be used instead of fairway woods as well. I find it so strange that here in Egypt in the club I play at nobody ever uses a hybrid. I've checked the place where all the members leave their sets in and I couldn't find a single hybrid in any of the bags. Even though a lot of Americans are members of the club and the hybrids are pretty common among American players.

Hybrids are made to replace long irons that can be unforgiving and difficult to hit. They also make hitting balls out of the rough much easier. I have a 2 iron hybrid that I use, mainly off the tee on shorter par 4s and occaisionally out of the rough. I still carry long irons because I can still hit them well and get the "right" distance out of them. I do choose to carry a 3 wood as well. For me it's all about not creating too significant of a gap between clubs. I hit my 3 iron ~210/215, my 2 iron hybrid ~225/230, my 3 wood ~240, and my driver ~275 or more depending n the variables.
Hybrids are crazy popular now and I believe so for good reason. I seriously doubt seeing a decline in them in the future. I can only see them becomming more and more popular due to the fact that they allow you to hit the ball longer and (for most) are much more forgiving.

I use my hybrid (21˚) the most to escape trouble, mostly punching out of trees or out of deep rough. For me, it's a solid 200yd club. I still use my 3 and 5 woods, I just don't use a 4 iron often. Highly recommended.....
