I had a set of Wilson and a set of Ping. The Ping beat the heck out of the Wilsons.
I also used a Big Bertha driver.
Unfortunately in 2001 I had an accident which kind of stopped me from being able to play (I had a 3 handicap and used to shoot in the high 70's and low 80's regularly).

I picked up a new set of Mizuno MP37 irons, 3-4-5 MP 001 woods and a Nike 460 Ignite driver, (just like Tiger used to use and I hit it about 2/3 as far as Tiger). Got everything brand new on eBay through multiple auctions and had a blast doing it.
I carry...TaylorMade V Steel 2 (13deg), 4 (16.5), 9 (23deg) fairway woods, Hogan Hybrid 4 iron, Taylormade RAC Combo iron 5 all the way down to the 60 deg. Rossa Monza Corsa Putter. Love the entire set. Used to play to about a 12 hndcp, now pushing 15 or so.
The V-Steels are the best econo fairway woods on the market IMO. I'm not a long hitter, but I hit my 2 wood as far as most guys hit driver and hit the fairway more often.
I recommend checking out Golfclubexchange Site This is a very reliable place to buy used, no risk of ripoff because payment is escrowed by the site until buyer accepts shipment and approves of merchandise purchased.

DR505, Almost any known brand will be a significant improvement over any 35 yr old set. I'm guessing that your hndcp would be 18+: check out Callaway Big Bertha, X-16, X-18, Ping G2, TaylorMade RAC OS. Run from anything that looks thin and sleek!!
Driver - Do yourself a favor and don't get anything lower than a 10.0 degree driver.

I have a set of Callaway X18 graphite shafts, Taylor made woods and an Adams driver. I have an old putter. I am not sure who makes it, but I am sure that putter is the root of all my putting problems. Or it could be the Nike balls, but those seem work well for Tiger. It couldnt be me, could it?
Smoke'em if you got'em.

Have lots of classic stuff collecting dust...'69 staff; '76 bullet back staff; Hogan Apex II (black); Spalding 16th Pro; Ping Eye II original square groove in berrilium copper, NEVER PLAYED...a Ping Anser "Dale" putter, a few initial run Cameron putters, sand wedges from all over the place...

Callaway 456 big bertha driver, Adams Tight Lies 3 and 5 fairway woods. Callaway 2I Heavenwood, Adams GT3 Tour Irons, Oddyssey 2 ball putter. In all honesty I won the hybrid at an outing, and I never intended on using it, but I've always had problems getting my long irons in the air, so I started playing it, and its been great for me. I can hit it for distance, and fade and draw it much better than say a 7 wood.

Thanks TS...when I was golfing regularly...you hit it exactly, 18 handicap! If I get new clubs, I'll golf more often. I tried a buddy's set of Ping irons with Taylor Made woods and was amazed at the better control and the extra distance!

I have a set of Ping ISI irons -- THEY WERE AN ENGAGEMENT PRESENT....FROM MY WIFE! That always seems to amaze guys at the course...I hear a lot "you got golf club back when you gave her the ring? I didn't get shit!"
Love then but they seem like blades now compared to the newer wider soled versions out there. I am on 5'4" and love the custom fitting.
Scotty Cameron Studio Design #5 -- gorgeous putter that I bought with poker tourney winnings. Sort of half blade and falf mallet design in a black pearl finish.

Knock offs that were made for me with extended shafts and +2 degree club heads. I am 6'4", so it is kinda hard to find stock clubs for me. I just introduced the wife to golf and she is loving it. Hopefully if she likes it enough and wants to play more I can get some more clubs.
